March 2010

‘So how many shoes DO you own?’  Several nosy friends have practically pinned me down trying to force me to answer this uncomfortably pointed question.  To their disappointment, I answer like a stubborn FBI agent who has just been asked to release volatile governmental information.  “It’s top secret.”

Maybe it’s because shoes will always look great on, no matter how much water I’ve retained.  Maybe it’s because they instantly create a sexier posture, stance, and attitude.  Maybe it’s because there are so many styles, colors, textures, and trends to choose from.  Maybe it’s a sign of a developing foot fetish.  Or maybe it’s simply because I’m an incurable fashionista who craves anything stylish.   Whatever the reason, I love shoes and I’m starting to feel like a Korean Imelda Marcos.

But unlike Imelda’s widely publicized shoe count, my inventory count is top secret even to myself.  Strangely enough, my shoes are separated from each other, sitting in mini-collections rather than one enormous shoe museum like Imelda’s grand displays.  Gathering them all together in one lump sum and counting them is something I don’t dare do.  My guilty conscience couldn’t take it.  From the 3,220 YouTube videos revealing personal shoe collections though it seems others don’t have a problem with it.

I’m guessing that unlike me with my overly-sensible parents, Imelda must have grown up with parents who lavished her every fashion whim, understood the value of frivolous fashion items and even considered them a fun investment.  I imagine that Imelda must’ve grown up with lots of praise and adoration concerning her beautiful and ever-growing shoe collection.  Instead, I grew up having to defend my every shoe purchase.  ‘Why do you need another pair of black shoes,” my parents would desperately ask (and contribute to years of haunting shoe-purchase-guilt).

With this upbringing, I’ve tried to appease both the ‘Buy the shoe’ and ‘Why do you need another pair?’ voices in my head by only buying shoes that I really and truly love (the type of shoes that I will go to sleep dreaming about if I don’t have) and even then, I buy only when they’re on sale so I can help silence the guilt with the high of the deal.  Of course, this little mind-trick has led me to where I am today.   view earlier post to see a glimpse of my shoe closet (these are just my stilettos)

Maybe one day, I’ll get up the nerve to uncover the total number of shoes currently housed in separate areas of my apartment.   If I do, my next task will be to come to terms with my growing clothing collection…

I’ve been really into damasks (as if you couldn’t already tell from this blog’s design).  And I love baroque details, with classic black / white pairings so I salivated over this picture of Nicky Hilton’s dining room.

I actually have that same fabric that you see on her chairs as my bedroom curtains (bought at Targe’t and pictured here) and I made my own matching bed pillow shams with additional curtain fabric (also pictured below).  This week, I got a little creative and added some glossy black damask stickers to the wall behind my baroque headboard (that i bought direct from a furniture wholesaler on ebay a couple years ago).  Signchick1.etsy.com hooked me up with these easy to apply stickers.  Don’t worry, I won’t go crazy and start applying scratch ‘n sniff stickers next…

The lighting also needed a makeover.  Here’s what was involved:

  1. I dismantled the old ugly apartment lighting which looked like a bowl was stuck to the ceiling.
  2. I had an electrician install this chandelier that I bought direct from a wholesaler online and I had the handy electrician put everything on a more romantic dimmer.
  3. I bought a white baroque circular frame from a wholesaler online, had them cut it in half free of charge and used it as part of my makeshift crown.
  4. I bought, cut and glued damask wrapping paper over the gaping hole that the previous unsightly lighting fixture uncovered
  5. I then used industrial strength tape to make the molding stick to the ceiling which will save me from being penalized later for abusing my apartment
  6. Lastly, I added baby chandelier to the draping crystals (tied on mini chandelier lighting kits)

Voila! I have a damask themed, black and white bedroom on a budget!

Here’s another inspiring photo I found on one of my favorite home decor sites, brocadehome.com

When Devon Aoki made her big debut into the fashion world, I questioned why?  how?  and again WHY?  Sure, I was excited to finally see an Asian face in the fashion spreads but why, why in the world HER?  I had non-model FRIENDS who were far prettier and taller than Devon all around me.  Why did the fashion world choose and embrace Devon with her freckly round face, perma-frown and short stature (5’7” is nearly midget sized in the modeling world and only Kate Moss was able to get away with it still to this day).  And here Devon was suddenly gracing the covers, walking the catwalks and gaining international fame all the while inadvertently representing Asian beauty for us all.

I likened Devon to Alek Wek another quizzical ethnic newbie on the fashion front.  Both were loved for their untraditional beauty and extreme racial features.  “Exotic” (I hate that word) is the euphemistic term I’d use to describe their quote unquote beauty.  That’s why I get so excited whenever I see “real” Asian beauties grace the runways.

This year we had several noteworthy examples.Liu Wen, the first Asian to walk the famed Victoria’s Secret Runway is both tall (5’10”) and stunning.

And who can forget Daul Kim,(photographed above) Karl Lagerfield’s muse and featured model in his Chanel videos.

Project Runway’s alum, Daniel Vosovic’s presentation during NY fashion week fall 2010 surprisingly showcased ONLY Asian models.  With the exception of his runway show though, Asian models were scarce (not surprising).

At every fashion week that I attend, I always play a solitary, secret game of “Where’s Waldo” except instead of Waldo, I’m looking for the elusive Asian model.  Though challenging, this game is usually short on fun ‘cuz usually after finding 1 girl, it is game over.  Here are some of the girls I spotted throughout the week.

Who’s your favorite and why?

This month’s O magazine caught my eye because Oprah was on the cover showing off shoes from her to-die-for shoe closet.   It reminded me of my earlier post on celebrity closets which attracted a lot of attention and so I had to capture the Oprah photos and share with you some additional closet photos (including MINE) as a follow-up.

Here’s MY shoe closet (on a budget of course).  I made the shelving unit myself using an Ikea unit that I bought on sale They ran out of white shelving which is what I would have preferred but I didn’t care so much being that I knew it would be hidden behind the curtains shown here.  The sheer, white floor-to-ceiling curtain and wall-to-wall curtain rod were also inexpensive finds from Ikea.  The shoes, well they were all bought either on sale or were gifts from my lovely friends at Bloomies, Bruno Magli, Gucci and Ferragamo.

I love the Oscars, not ‘cuz I’m a movie buff but because of the 1hr fashion parade that solidifies the season’s trends.  In line with spring trend colors,  blushes, and Gr-eige (all forms of grey and beige), many celebrities showed off pretty pales.  The following dresses from the Oscar fashion parade were on my favorites list:

You can see below that the ‘gr-eige” trend with blush tones were prominent at the Golden Globes awards too.

Last year, this Korean beauty was named Korea’s most favored, most-in-demand ad endorser and Forbes Korea named her top Korean celebrity (based on earnings).  The Korea Times reported, “(Yu Na) Kim led the pack appearing in 15 commercial films over the past year. Currently, Yu Na is modeling for Hyundai Motor, Maeil Dairies, Samsung Electronics and others.”  Surely now that she has broken the world record for best figure skating score she will continue to rake in the sponsorships, ads and media attention.  I’m eagerly awaiting fashion editorial spreads featuring Kim Yu Na and can’t wait to see her in non-skating fashions.

If you want to learn how to achieve Yu Na Kim’s dramatic eye makeup shown above click here

Apparently, her body is perfectly proportioned and primed for modeling (as a petite model).   The following excerpt from chosun.com has the perfect proportions boiled down to a near science.

“Kim’s body proportion is often said to be the perfect golden ratio. The Chosun Ilbo has obtained her measurements from uniform maker INS 102, which measured Kim at a hotel in Seoul in December.

Standing 164 cm tall and weighing 47 kg, Kim’s lower body from waist to the ankle bone measures 96 cm, almost double the length of her torso, which is 50 cm. Fashion stylist Kim Seong-il said, “With normal people, if the ratio of the upper and the lower body is 4.5:5.5, we consider them long-legged. Because of her long legs, Kim’s jumps look bigger and more elegant.”

Her long and slender arms, which measure 68 cm, also help boost her expression grade. Dr Chung Jae-young at Jelim Plastic Surgery Clinic said, “Normally, the length of your arms stretched out matches your height. But for Kim, the length of both arms plus her shoulder width, which is 46cm, is almost 180 cm. Her arms are very long.” That makes small arm movements look softer and more fluid.

Muscles developed throughout her body also help her movements look well balanced, whereas over development of muscles in certain parts of the body such as upper arms or thighs can make movements look stiff.

Fashion stylist Han Hye-yeon said, “Unlike many other athletes, Kim has a slender, flexible body, so she has the natural ‘S’ curve when she’s performing.” Kim So-yeon, an executive at a modeling agency, said, “She has perfect body proportions for a fashion model.”

Victoria Beckham. Whether you love her or love to hate her, you’ve got to give props to mommy Posh for consistently looking as if she just walked off the pages of a fashion magazine.  She celebrates her rockin’ post-pregnancy body with stylish outfits that are sexy while remaining ..well posh.  Here are a few favored examples:

One can only hope to look this fit and fabulous after having kids!

Etsy.com is such a great forum for new artists to post their work and gain recognition on an international level.  The following fashionable pieces caught my attention recently.

this 9”x9” print by a fellow Chanel lover, “ipaintpictures” (who is also found at ipaintpictures.com) is only $25

This Parisian scene painted in oil by “Shannispishak” is 10”x20” and sells for $175

This 8”x10” print by “christahoward” makes me miss my dog and is reasonably priced at only $19.

This gorgeous portrait is called “My girl wears Chanel” and is by “DannyRoberts.”  The 8′x11” print is only $25

This cute 5”x7” print by “poppopportraits” is wearing Chanel too.   And it’s easy to add to your art collection for only $9!

Inspired by all of the celebrity closets, I’ve installed the requisite glamour girl chandelier in my closet/bedroom and have installed a floor-to-ceiling shoe closet.  I’ll post a picture soon.
