I figured this may be the last year that Juliet would let me dress her for Halloween so I wanted to have some fun with it.  Through the Fab Kids and Their Stylish Moms Facebook network and my following on Instagram @fab_kids, I threw (and sold out) an Haute Halloween themed costume party where kids (mostly toddlers) were encouraged to dress as their fashion icon.  Being that I…er I mean Juliet adores Anna Wintour, I started scheming months ahead to put together a Vogue triplet team consisting of (Asian) Anna Wintour, a Karl Lagerfeld and Andre Leon Talley.   Here was my inspirational shot that led me to this crafty planning.

minifashionistas

Obviously these costumes are more for the fashion-obsessed parents than they are for the cute toddlers. But what fashionista wouldn’t go gaga over these images?  Off to work I went finding mini Anna Wintour’s outfit.  I knew I wanted her to carry a Vogue magazine so I pulled out my signed September issue from Fashion’s Night Out and made a miniature copy, half the size of the actual magazine.   Tip – make two color copies and glue them 1 on each side to a piece of cardboard (I made a cut out from a box to make it super sturdy). That way, no matter which way the toddler carries it, it won’t bend, and will always show the front cover.

Pictured here are also some Anna – like jewels (that my husband mistakenly removed from baby before arriving to the party argh!)

Here is Anna with her signature jewels. Pretty nice match for just $1 a necklace, right?

andre leon talley anna wintourI’m still so mad that I never got to get pictures with Juliet wearing them…   Here’s the rest of Juliet’s mini-Anna look without the dollar store black sunglasses that I had her wear.

I found the tweed Cream and gold fleck cardigan at Zara  – so Chanel – looking!  And I couldn’t resist buying a matching sz 13/14 for me to wear with her.  The tweed ballet shoes are from Old Navy and the skirt is from Target.  I did scour the web (for months) for the perfect Anna wig but I simply could not find anything similar at or near her size.  In the end, I gave an adult sized wig an Anna haircut but there was no way this toddler was going to keep it on.  So I reluctantly wore it myself and bought myself a Vogue tee to wear under the Zara cardigan.

Days before when I had given up on her ever wearing the wig, I bought her her very first real haircut and felt defeated not being able to find any way to color her hair Anna’s blondish brown (without actually having to permanently color her hair).  You should have seen the stylist’s face when I asked him to make Juliet look like the picture of Anna that I brought in.

anna wintour and Karl lagerfeld

Juliet was so enthralled with the whole hair cutting process that she sat patiently and as still as any determined minifashionista would.

Anna Wintour

Karl Lagerfeld’s signature look was easier to replicate.  All you really need are a:

  • Chanel shopping bag
  • White cat
  • black suit
  • brooch and/or necklaces
  • and a children’s white wig
  • black sunglasses

Juliet’s friend, Mosi got it spot ON!

One little trick to keep a kid-sized wig on a toddler is to add an elastic band under the chin.  You can barely see it here but it allowed for Karl to run around music class without ever shifting his perfect platinum hair! IMG_1717

Did you notice his CC shoes?  They actually say “Chanel on the inside.  Fab!!  You can get some just like these here.

Speaking of fab, it doesn’t get more fab than Andre Leon Talley, editor-at-large of Vogue Magazine.  He’s stately, he’s acessorized to the nines and he commands attention everywhere his giant fur-caped self goes.

andre leon talley

Andre Leon Talley’s costume should include:

  • a cape
  • fur
  • necklaces
  • grey hair
  • a fab suit
  • Vogue magazine

Our little Andre refused to wear his fur cape but kept the rest of his accessories on including a Chanel brooch!  His shoes came off for dancing…

make at home costumes

Halloween for us is a fun-filled whirlwind of non-stop costume changes and back-to-back festivities.  It’s a blast cuz we love dressing up and getting creative.  Here are some make-at-home kids Halloween costumes that I’ve created from things already in J’s closet costing me $0.  These are all easy DIY costumes that you could try at home too.

1). China doll

Accessorize a qipao with a Chinese takeout box and/or matching Chinese fan and layer a matching dress or tutu underneath for extra warmth and flair and voila, you’ve got a costume!  I just happened to have these crazy baby wiglets (which are all the rage in Asia) to help complete the costume-y look.

2).  80s Aerobics Instructor

My tiny dancer already has a collection of leotards, tights and leggings so all I had to do was cut up a sweatshirt, make a sweatband (with two old white socks tied together) and have her carry a blow-up boombox (a take-home gift from a friend’s birthday party).  Let’s get physical!!

3).  Bride

This year we also re-used J’s baptism dress (can’t believe it still fits, only shorter)!  I bobby pinned extra tulle that I already had to her hair, topped her off with a tiara, and gave her flowers to carry with something blue and tada, she’s a baby bride!

4).  Doll

Her recital costume topped off with a sparkly bow and matching shoes made for a cute doll costume. But you could take any frilly doll-like dress (try vintage styles) and convert it into a dolly outfit.

If I had more time I would have loved to have made her a wind-up attachment like this.  But alas, mommy was too worn out from planning and executing the BOO-tiful Halloween Bash from the night before to DIY this.

You could also have used makeup to draw in long dolly lashes and rosy cheeks but again, this mom ran out of energy. baby doll

5). Rainbow

I couldn’t keep a straight face when I dropped of J at school like this. She was the fluffiest, frilliest ball of awesomeness.  We basically piled on all her tutus and accessorized with matching tights, socks, bow and flag.  Tutu Cute!

6).  Coco Chanel

If you’re a die-hard Chanel fan like we are, perhaps dressing like Coco Chanel is for you.  Think quilting, Chanel-like chains, pearls, white and black and classic silhouettes.  We happen to have a Coco doll which we replicated with a quilted white dress.

7).  Anna Wintour

For the Haute Halloween party that I hosted for fab kids in NYC, J and I both dressed as Anna Wintour.  This was a fairly easy make-at-home costume as well.  anna wintour costume

For more on how to dress like Karl Lagerfeld, Andre Leon Talley and other fashion icons, see my earlier post about Haute Halloween costumes!

8).  Nerd

Think bowties, suspenders, pocket protectors, and black-rimmed glasses plus add some back-t0-school accessories and you’ve got an easy DIY costume.  Check out all the nerdy fashions from my back-to-school play dates in NYC here!

And stay tuned to see all the details from this year’s Halloween bash!

I love challenging myself to never wear an outfit the same way twice.  I like to mix it up and shop my closet for new looks all the time.  That way I never get too bored of what I have.  The same goes for my daughter’s closet, which similar to mine is a mix of high and low brands.  This post revolves around 1 skirt that I bought from Target (on sale).  It’s still a bit big around the waist so I think we’ll get 4 seasons of use out of this one (an amazing feat as any mom of a growing toddler knows!)

She first wore it during my Haute Halloween party where kids dressed up as their fashion icon.  Juliet dressed as Anna Wintour.

IMG_1820Here I paired it with a cardigan from Zara and shoes from Old Navy that you can see here.  Click here for more outfit details and ideas on how to costume your child as Karl Lagerfeld or Andre Leon Talley!

Here, she is wearing a tee from The Children’s Place that I bought for $5, a Catimini reversible fur vest from Century 21, and gifted glitter shoes.  The glitter crown comes in 4 colors and can be bought on my Fab Kids Facebook site.

She attended Kids Fashion Week in NY wearing this Target outfit (blazer, skirt, purse).  The tights are from Catimini bought on sale at Century 21, the tie was found at The Children’s Place on clearance, and the Elsy designer blouse is from Century 21.  The sneakers were from a hand me down shop called Once Upon a Time and bought on sale for just $3.

The same tights, blouse, tie, skirt combo is shown here again for her nerdy school outfit.  I topped it off this time with a cool leather jacket from Target.    2015-04-27  And lastly, today she wore the tights, and skirt with a Catimini shirt (bought at Century 21), and wore it with my bandana and a vintage purse I bought on an Etsy sale.  The sandals which she is quickly outgrowing are from Gymboree.  Don’t be afraid to mix patterns as long as the’re in the same color family!

40 guests, big and small sold out the Haute Halloween costume party that I hosted at Gymboree Tribeca.  And they were dressed to the nines! Here are some of the cute families!

halloween costume

The little ones enjoyed a dance party within the gym setting and bounced, climbed and played throughout.  It was also a great chance for the adults to network and bond over all the costumed characters.  There were many!

halloween costume

There were story book characters like the (little) man with the yellow hat with curious George, a princess and an owl for instance.  And then there were those who took the Haute Halloween party theme literally and dressed as their fashion icon.  Below are Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Pharrell, Audrey Hepburn, and a Hunger Games inspired costume.  Creative huh?  For more on how to recreate the Karl and Anna costumes read my earlier post here.

We also had Robin Thicke, a rockstar, and Andre Leon Talley honor us with their presence.  For all the event photos see the FB page Fab Kids and Their Stylish Moms.  Thanks to our event photographers So Family Online and Gotham Love for stationing themselves in the photo room and being patient with all the sugar-ed up kids!

More on the food and beverage, dessert station decor and sponsors in my next post…
