True Religion is one of my favorite denim companies so I was excited when the brand and Stroller In The City invited me in to select a couple pieces for little Juliet to wear!  THANK YOU True Religion for gifting Juliet with these fab pieces! With the back-to-school season just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to style the True Religion pieces for the fall.

This classic True Religion jean is their Casey style (a similar one can be found here).   My 3.5 year old daughter who is 40″ tall is wearing a size 3 here just to give you some sizing reference in case you were interested in buying these.  I love these because they can be dressed up or down and they are rugged enough for the playground!

Juliet loves her lion backpack from the Chicago zoo gift shop and likes to let out a big roar when I take pictures of her with this wild backpack lol.

The next back to school outfit started with a True Religion two toned, raglan tee (arms which are not shown here are a wine color). It is styled under a cream, tweed cardi and over a tutu skirt for a girly, glam look.DSC_9420

Juliet loves anything with a butterfly so this gifted cream and gold glitter tutu from grandma was a hit too!DSC_9419

The fashion is what makes back to school season so exciting for me!  What about you?  What are you most looking forward to this back to school season?

I heart nerds.  Always have, always will.

i love nerds

So when summer started coming to its close, I felt like Fab Kids should have one last hurrah in the park while the weather was still nice and so I decided to have a nerdy back-to-school-themed play date.

Even toddlers go to school. My daughter at 18 months old this fall was enrolled in music, school skills, ballet as well as art for instance.  So to get into the back to school spirit, I thought it would be fun to get some toddlers together to do a book exchange.  And as with all my themed play dates, the kids were asked to dress up in theme.

Some inspiration shots were featured on the Facebook and Instagram accounts to get guests excited and thinking about what to wear.

nerd party

It was a fun mommy and me play date in the park.  I supplied the picnic blankets and organized the book exchange. Here are some of the kids checking each other out.  The one pictured on the left looks like she’s doing a little dance, doesn’t she?

picnic IMG_0727

All kids were asked to bring a book to trade in.  And at arrival, each was given a number in exchange for their book.  So the first person to arrive had first choice of all the books and so on and so on..

IMG_0666 We brought in Goodnight Ipad, a modern day spoof on Goodnight Moon as well as Lisa in New York figuring some modern NY mommy and kid duo would appreciate these.  Don’t you love our little nerds?  I can’t get enough of suspenders with bowties.

Back-to-school season is exciting for a whole host of reasons:  parents get their time back, kids see their school friends again, everyone buys something new, and you look forward to a brand new start.  Why not mark the occasion with a back-to-school bash they’ll never forget?  That’s what we at Fab Kids did in NYC with our friends and followers!  Once families were settled into their new routines, we gathered everyone up at the NY Kids Club which offered their fun padded, play space, arts and crafts room and incredibly helpful staff.  And we got GEEKY!  Here are 8 tips on how to host the best back-to-school bash that your friends have ever seen!

back to school bash, nerdy party, geek chic party, school is cool party, kids party ideas

  1.  Send a themed invite. Choose a scholastic image that you want to carry throughout your party. For instance, our rainbow colored pencils from the invite were found as cookies at the event on a rainbow colored dessert table.  The rainbow color theme was also found in the photo booth garlands, numbers, alphabets and balloons throughout the space.  Invite text included phrases with lots of alliteration such as, “brainiac book swap, dorky dance-a-thon, and NYC nerds.”  Make it fun, descriptive, and enticing!  It sets the tone!  Get your guests excited!colored pencil invite, back to school invite
  2. Dress up!  Fab Kids events always have a fun fashion theme.  For this one, we encouraged everyone to get geeky by posting inspiration photos in our social media and eblasts. (search #fab_nerd on IG if you want to see)  And we offered prizes for ‘best dressed.’ I love having dress-up themes for events becomes they become an automatic ice breaker on-site.  Plus it encourages creativity and whimsy from all the guests making the event something special to look forward to.  Plus the pictures…  can we say, ‘Instagram-able?’how to host a nerd party, how to plan a nerd party, kids nerd party, kids back to school party, geek chic
  3. Host a book swap.  I’m a big fan of re-cycling and re-using what you have.  And I believe one person’s trash can be another person’s treasure.  We encouraged each Brainiac to bring in a book they’ve outgrown or gotten bored of and swap it for another gently used book.  We actually had so many to giveaway from our own bookshelf that each child walked away with 2 new books!  The book swap had the additional side effect of adding a fun community feel to the event.back to school, back to school party, back to school bash, preschool books
  4. Prepare arts and crafts for the whole family to try.  For our themed activity, the little ones created masterpieces on composition books provided by one of our sponsors, Ba Ba Bling.  I provided alphabet stickers, scholastic-looking, scrapbook paper, and school stickers for the little hands to decorate with.  The older kids enjoyed making bead bracelets and necklaces with colorful string and alphabet beads. Parents created mock certificates, filling in the space for their children’s “most likely to____”award, all of which became fun photo props.back to school party, geek chic party ,geek chic, nerd party
  5. Offer smart snacks and sweets.  For desserts think nerds, dum dum lollipops, smarties, gummy brains and cupcakes topped with nerd glasses.  For water find the brand Smart Water.  And for snacks you could offer alphabet crackers and dip, Smart Food popcorn, pretzels or cereal shaped as letters, or any small snack stuffed into pocket protectors! B Lee Events did a wonderful job providing and presenting creative themed options such as these.  And they were such a pleasure to work with -so professional, cheery, and full of amazing ideas!  I highly recommend them!back to school dessert table, nerdy snacks, nerdy candy, nerd cupcakes
  6. Prepare photo props.  With fashions this smart, your guests will be studying each other!  Our guests definitely got an A+ when it came to getting dressed to impress!  Fab kids and fab parents, for sure!  For your party, gather props that you already have around the house and offer them to guests to try on!  I brought ties, bow ties, a calculator, a ruler, school bus toys, nerd glasses and a giant inflatable #2 pencil.  ..yes I had all of that around the house lol.  What can I say?  This is the 3rd back-to-school nerdy NY party that I’ve hosted!  See here for 2015 and 2014nerdy party, how to plan a nerd party, tips for nerdy party
  7. Dance the day away!  We called ours a “dorky dance-a-thon”, pumped up the music and let everyone shake it out in the colorful, play space that was NY Kids Club.  Kids danced on giant trampolines, snapped their suspenders, and busted a move with balloons, in the air waving around like they just don’t care!  If you wanted, you could have a leader teach some simple, nerdy dance moves for the kids to follow along to Simon Says style to add to the theme or make that an entirely separate game altogether. ny kids club, nerd party
  8. Giveaway goodies.  I like to always send my guests home with a little something to remember the event by.  This event came fully sponsored so our guests walked away with tons of amazing items worth more than 12x the price of their event ticket. (free event planning consultation from B. Lee Events, $50 off a NY Kids Club new class enrollment and a free PJ party, $42 worth of customized Mabels Labels, exclusive offers to get onto Little Spoon’s organic meal delivery service waitlist, trendy buttons from Kidpik, $50 off new Usborne and More books, Shopkins themed lip balms from Moose Toys, discounted Meisterdish offers, and more)!  But for your party it could be as simple as sending guests home with the remaining items from the snack and dessert bar in cute themed bags.  My daughter decorated our goody bags with alphabet stickers easily converting it from a plain purple bag to a themed one!little spoon, ba ba bling kids, curated care, ny kids club, shopkins

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this party such a BLAST!  I had so much fun seeing you get down in your geekiest gear.  Thank you to all the event sponsors who helped make this happen!  See below for details!  And see our FB page for the full album of event photos.

momtrends

Securing your financial future may not be the sexiest topic but it sure makes sense to seriously think about it when you realize that kids’ college tuitions are just getting pricier each year. (Did you know that currently it takes about $75k / year for a student to room, board and attend NYU for instance)?  Per year, you heard me right…. Us blogging moms learned all about this at the recent MomTrends ny529edu event with NY 529 who was there to helpfully explain this powerful savings plan.

momtrends, chef, kids cooking, kids chef hat

Luckily I have a financial guru (my brainiac husband who also works in finance) who was smart enough to start a NY 529 as soon as our daughter was born. So I knew the major benefit was tax savings. Your earnings grow federally tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. But there was still so much that I needed to learn!

ny 529, ny schools, ny529edu

Here are 5 things I didn’t know about the state – subsidized, higher education savings plan:

  1. The money can be used not just for college but for: post graduate programs, vocational and post secondary trade schools, books, supplies, equipment, computers, and certain room and board fees
  2. Anyone can start one (parents, grandparents, other relatives, friends—as long as he or she is a U.S. citizen or a resident alien) and with just $25 minimum
  3. There’s a link to send out for contributions in lieu of holiday and birthday gifts
  4. opening an account takes as little as 10 minutes
  5. You can change the beneficiary, as desired, to a sibling, a relative, or even to yourself—should you choose to go back to school (it’s never too late for that either!).  So even if your child for some reason doesn’t end up needing the full amount, it can be transferred to someone who does need it!

While we were planning for our kids’ futures, the kids had so much fun planning our lunches!  The event was held at the ICE Institute of Culinary Education in Battery Park City and it was the perfect place for our kids to turn into chefs for the day!  Here is little J designing her own chef hat…of course she had to bedazzle it with gems, and color in purple and pink!  (SUCH a girly girl!)making chef hat, kids chef hat, kids cooking, princess outfit

She was so cute, telling me she was going to be just like Disney princess Tiana (who loves cooking in all the stories).   Here she is modeling her new chef hat, accessorized of course with the tiara she wore to the event!

Looking for fall fashions?  Look no further.  Gap Kids had some great autumn colors in their boys collection for back to school which were the perfect thing to wear for our Central Park shoot with Danny Weiss.

There’s something about ending a summer with a white party that I just love.  I’ve been hosting these Kids’ White parties for 3 years now and they just get bigger and better each year.  This year, with Mialandyn’s cool kids’ teepees in mind, I titled the party, Summer Glamp and found the perfect venue for our glamping theme.  180 Maiden Lane has this beautiful atrium space with an indoor lawn, palm trees, and tree stump stools.  It was the perfect place to go glamp!  It was like being surrounded by the beautiful outdoors while being shielded from any unwanted outdoor elements -no mosquitos, wind and hair frizz!

The venue had me so inspired, I became a poet when I didn’t even know it!  Here was the invite, written by me and designed by Little Web Writing Hood who is helping me re-design this blog as we speak!

Guests who arrived first, won door prizes and were greeted by our glamping guitarist who sang and filled the room with her beautiful voice. Campfire chats and singalongs, anyone?

Decor consisted of these white teepees which I decorated with crystals and hid fun finds for the kids inside.  Kids found fashion-forward books with titles like ‘Shoe La La” (one of Juliet’s favorites) and balloons.

To further achieve this glamp scene, I secured campfire toys like a smores marshmallow Playset from Playvisions, and campfire props by Props In a Box.

One click of a button can save the memories and allows sharing on social media!  Perfect for our social media savvy moms, right?

As moms mingled and browsed the sponsor tables, they were sure to bump into the friendly Mialandyn Events who was on-site providing tips on how to create a similar luxe look for your next party.  Her table attracted hungry snack-ers who could find waterfall water, camp critter cookies, trail mix, and smores flavored cookies.

If your daughter is obsessed with Disney princesses, you’ll want to read on for inspiration on how to throw your own Disney princess party or play date.  I threw this one at home last minute using some free printables, hand me down Disney costumes, and every princess-y toy we had in the apartment proving that you can have a posh play date without spending a lot of cash.  It’s simply about adding special details, elevating presentation, and adding stylish touches.

Here are 8 tips to host your own posh play date and celebrate the everyday in style.

how to host a princess party, princess party for toddlers, disneyside party

  1. Give your guests a special message by showing them you took extra care in inviting them over.  Whether it be a themed evite, a welcome sign on the door, a goody bag, or photos sent post-event, I think it’s always nice to treat them in a special manner and let them know you took extra care in welcoming and hosting them.how to plan a princess party, disney princess party, disney princesses for toddlers
  2. Play some princess tunes.  These days, you don’t even need to buy a CD.  Free themed playlists can easily be found on Spotify and Pandora.  In 5 minutes, I was able to customize and keep for future use, a Spotify playlist with all the popular Disney princess songs.  It cheerfully played in the background when guests came in and as kids were playing with the royal toys.  You may find that it quickly turns into an impromptu singalong with kids belting out ‘Let It Go’ so have those mics handy just in case!
  3. Play a Disney movie.  Having just hosted a Frozen screening in our theater with arts/crafts, toys and snacks (all Frozen themed of course), I decided to change it up this time with a Beauty and The Beast screening.  We had popcorn and ballroom dancing going on in the living room!
  4. Mommy and Me Manicures.  As you can see from the video above, we were lucky enough to be graced by my friend, Kyeongah who was a Jamberry specialist. She wrapped our nails in pretty patterns that were non-toxic and unchippable. Check out her site to see the full collection and order your own pretty ‘polishes!’   It was a total treat and such a fun way for moms and their mini-me’s to share in some girly fun!how to host a princess party for toddlers
  5. Display princess toys and castles.  Being that J and her friends are all toddlers, it’s important to offer another activity or two to keep them entertained.  They’re unlikely at this age to sit through an entire movie.  Disney magic clip dolls and castles are the perfect toys for their nimble fingers to play dress-up and imaginative play with.  I also brought out all her Elsa dolls, and princess Pez’s to carry out the theme throughout the space.toddler toys for girlsdisneyside princess party
  6. Encourage dress-up!  Guests arrived with their own princess dresses but also got to try on beautiful costumes, necklaces, tiaras, gloves and bippity boppity boo wands upon arrival.  It was a princess’s DREAM!SAMSUNG CSCprincess play date, disney princess party, disneyside
  7. Offer princess snacks and treats.  Fruits, sticker-ed princess applesauce, Olaf cookies, Little Mermaid lollipops, princess jellybeans, and first love (Hershey’s) kisses were popular amongst the little ones!princess party, toddler princess party, disney princess party, olaf snack b c f FullSizeRender
  8. Prepare a photo shoot!  What princess doesn’t want to pose in front of a camera?  Preparing cut – outs of the Beast and Disney princes would be a fun way to encourage selfies.  I gathered all our tiaras and had the moms gather for a quick group shot (we hardly have any pictures together since we’re all about the kids, so this was a fun change-up!)how to host a party for a princess

NY mommies, make sure to sign up for my Fab Kids invites with your name, email, neighborhood and ages of kids.  I’m currently planning a patriotic picnic play date for June 25th, a white party and another back to school geek chic event.  Please follow Fab Kids on FB and IG for more information!

I’ve created monthly Fab Kids meetups and themed playdates and have recently made them open to the public and fans of my Instagram page, @fab_kids.  (Check this page out for more nerdy fashions!)

I was able to easily create this adorable invite through Paperless Post whom I love for fashionable evites on-the-go. You can select from numerous backgrounds, paper liners, envelopes, fonts and even stamps.  They make it super easy to create a stylish online invite (and even sell coordinating paper products too)!

Our 2nd nerdy playdate in the park was held this year at Elevated Acre, a little-known rooftop park with a great view of the East River, South Street Seaport and Brooklyn.

Photo1-10Sort of a secret plaza, it was the perfect place for the kids to run wild and have a private park all to themselves.

Here are the kids in their nerdy gear.  Don’t you just love the suspenders, bowties and glasses?

Of course my daughter ended up accessorizing herself with the stickers (as shown below).  Check out all the nerdy details!  (see school bus on J’s hair clips, glasses and crayons on her friend’s outfit and our nerdy photo props)9.28-001 Some of us moms got in on the nerdy fun too!IMG_8337back to school party back to school playdate

The book swap was simple.  Everyone brought in at least one book to swap and trade in for another.  First come first serve so the first person to arrive received a number 1 and was the first to be able to choose a book.  It’s a great way to re-use, and recycle during this back-to-school season.  Kids outgrow and get bored of items so fast.  So when they’re able to trade in and pick out a new book to read, it’s fun for everyone!IMG_8356

Everyone received a nerdy necklace (shown above) for attending and in the end, new friends and some adorable memories were made.

fab mom There’s definitely a set of moms, who even after having a baby are determined to be as fabulous and stylish as they once were pre-baby.  Channeling their fashion expertise into impeccably dressing their kid(s), they scour the web in search of the perfect shoes and accessories to complete their child’s ever-changing wardrobe and organize closets not as a non-stop chore but rather with a passion, as if Karl Lagerfeld were about to do a final inspection.    I am guilty of being one of these moms and finding other (crazy?) fab moms like me has become one of my new mom goals.

asdf

I’ve developed an eagle eye for spotting these women.  Read below and you’ll soon be able to spot a fab mom at your nearest playground:

  • We wear faux fur to the playground with our ripped jeans and movie-star sunglasses.
  • Leopard.  ’nuff said.
  • We refuse to wear sneakers outside of the gym (unless they have a trendy wedge heel).
  • Others curiously wonder how our kids always look like they just stepped out of a catalog
  • Our diaper bag is designer
  • We accessorize with Chanel despite it being completely inappropriate for the setting.
  • Matching outfits. Yes really.
  • Our kids live their lives in front of our cameras and on social media

Note how I say “we”.  I can poke fun at all of these unusual characteristics because I have exhibited every one of them, I’m sure.  9.13

Surely, you stare at us out of the corner of your eyes and wonder all sorts of things about our lifestyle, our choices and simply how we got out of the house looking so polished.  You might secretly hate us.  We know.  We see and feel those stares.  And we know we don’t fit in everywhere we go.  And yes we know we look ridiculous to you at times.

Rest assured, sometimes we hate ourselves too. It takes extra time and energy to care this much about how things look.  My husband nags me and tells me to relax when I have rare moments of downtime.  But instead, I race around the house trying to make everything look more presentable than need be, and can’t stop my perfectionism when it comes to my passion – fashion.  I’m often found sewing or crafting something for Juliet’s wardrobe.  Or I’m cleaning out our closets, editing things we have outgrown and /or haven’t worn.  I’m making sure that: all the hangers are facing the same way, that clothing is steamed, that outfits are planned, that sales are not missed.  If I didn’t care so much, I could actually take a breather and soak in the tub listening to Sade or something.

So while it may be simpler and more comfortable to slide into yet another pair of yoga pants and call it a day, I am in a skirt, blouse and ballerina hair bun.  (I will admit, I have actually forgone the high heel in exchange for flats..something I never thought I’d do)  But I have yet to give up my old wardrobe.  I figure if it still fits, celebrate it and wear it!  So what if my old fashion PR NYC wardrobe doesn’t fit in with the workout wear / mommy uniform I’m usually surrounded by?  I feel better, more like myself in my old wardrobe. Comparatively, yes, I’m dressed up at classes and play dates where I show up and I’m the only one accessorizing with something other than a diaper bag.  Sometimes I get asked if I’m going somewhere special that day.  (No, I think.  I just wanted to wear the pretty clothes that are sitting in my closet.  I’m just off to school drop-off like you.)

I don’t need an occasion anymore.  My child’s music or art or ballet class has become my occasion.  After all, what else does the stay at home mom usually get to leave the house for?  I dress to please me but I know better than to attend in something like a pencil skirt that would hinder my ability to chase after a toddler and sit on the ground during circle time.  Therefore, I have learned to tone down my fancier pieces with laid back jeans and perhaps a wedge sneaker thrown in as a nod to all the sneaker-ed moms in the room.

And I’ve started a new FB page for us fashion-obsessed moms.  Like Fab Kids!  And follow @fab_kids on Instagram where every Monday a #fab_mom and her child are featured.  Recently, I’ve started hosting NYC themed play dates and parties.  They involve fashion themes like our white party or back to school nerdy book exchange  or Haute Halloween for instance.  And they allow for fab moms to meet, network, and play with their little ones in the comfort of their Manolos.

I admit it.  I’ve become that crazy mom who is constantly planning lavish parties for her little one.  You would have thought I was planning a wedding with as much thought, time and energy I invested into my daughter’s first birthday.  See for yourself here.  I was dead set on making it the best birthday she’d never remember.  And on a budget.  And all by myself.

And now that her next birthday isn’t for another 7months, guess what… I’m already on it.  I have the theme, venue, Pinterest board, invites, decor and even the paper plates ready to go.   Don’t believe me? Much to my husband’s dismay, all the paper products are stacked and in my hallway closet.  The party’s theme is animal themed if you must know.  Guests will get to initially take pictures with Leo the lion (Juliet dressed in costume).  There will be animal mask photo props for the photo booth area, the singing troupe will be leading singalongs only with songs with animals in the lyrics, and themed foods will include hot dogs, animal crackers, and critter cupcakes – all designed with a strict vintage colored decor theme.  Juliet’s party animal friends are going to roar with delight.

And as if that weren’t crazy enough, I’ve been dreaming of other party themes that I could have Juliet host during the inbetween months now until her birthday. Because you know, you can never have enough parties.

Already I’ve got Juliet hosting a back to school party this September with my FB page “Fab Kids”(check it out now and give it some love).  Yes, she’s only 1.5 years old but yes she’s going to school this fall semester so why not celebrate?!  We’re requiring all the guests (babies and toddlers that is) to dress as nerdy as possible.  Think glasses, suspenders, bowties and pocket protectors.   It’s all about the fashion after all!  AND I already have Juliet’s outfit planned.

Those of you who follow me on Instagram already know that we’ve already hosted a (toddler) white party – P Diddy style where all guests showed up in white.

white party

White for a picnic playdate you say?  Deal with it.  Fashion is impractical.  It’s best kids learn that lesson early on.

Here is Juliet greeting her guests

Look at our little ones breaking bread and communing with one another (while wearing Chanel)….

You’ve gotta look fab while you’re having fun!

The kids had a load of fun playing with the park’s toys and enjoying story time and singalongs.  And I think a few passerbys and gawkers couldn’t help but vicariously enjoy the fun too.

All we needed was for P.Diddy to show up.  Ah well, there’s always next year.

Stop by Facebook to vote on details for our next NYC mommy and me meetup.  Nerds Rule!

And follow us on Instagram @Fab_Kids for outfit inspiration for your minifashionista!

While you do that, I’ll be planning my next, next party.  I’m thinking Haute Halloween… fashionable halloween anyone??
