When I told Juliet we were going to a superhero party, she replied that that she was a princess not a superhero.  (What a girly girl!)  So I told her she could be a superhero with princess powers and showed her this beautiful personalized cape from Creative Capes and she was SOLD!  All I did was dress up her 3rd birthday feather dress with her tiara, a broken light-up sabor and the pink/purple cape and accessories gifted to us from Creative Capes and KABOOM!  She turned into SUPER PRINCESS J!

According to Creative Capes’ founder, Holly, “Something as simple as a cape has the power to positively affect a child’s self-esteem.”  And it’s true!  I got to watch the transformation right before my very eyes at Gymboree’s Superhero themed prom!

If you know me, you know I love a good theme party so when Gymboree New York hosted its first-ever prom, Juliet and I had to go!  What fashionista doesn’t love a reason to dress-up?

Last year, Juliet wore a white sequin tutu dress from Little Trendsetter that featured an outrageously cute, oversized bubble-bow.

Her handsome date, Willem thoughtfully surprised her with a bouquet of flowers.  What a sweet date, huh? At the party, they danced, chased each other around and dined on pizza making the most of the incredible play space that Gymboree has to offer.

So this year, when Gymboree announced it was having its prom again and after People Magazine wrote this article, we were so excited to return!

Juliet and I had already dressed as flappers last Halloween so we already had Gatsby-esque outfits ready to go! Here’s a snapshot of us returning from our trick-or-treating adventure last year.

Admissions to the Gifted and Talented (G&T) programs in NYC requires a minimum score of 90 for district-wide programs and 97 for citywide programs.    The elusive test is important because it provides a shot at a high-quality alternative to the often unimpressive public school default.  And the stakes are high because for many parents, private schools (which can run up to 50k a year depending on which private school you choose in NYC) are oftentimes not an option.   Not only that but admittance into a citywide G&T score also means getting to skip the dreaded middle school admission process and scoring a guaranteed G&T seat through 12th grade which is like GOLD here in New York!  No wonder the pressure is ON.  It’s also especially intense here in New York because even if your genius child scores 99% or better on this test which is graded on a curve, there still is no guarantee of admission for the only 400 available citywide G&T seats.  (Only 1 in 4 99th percentile scoring kids get one of the coveted citywide G& T school spots!)  So the competition is fierce and the lottery system is real.    But how does one prep a 4 year old for a 1-2 hour exam where a stranger is allowed only to state a question once and never repeat the instruction?

gifted and talented, nyc tutoring

Kids who are extremely intelligent may still stumble on concepts when a strange test proctor questions them with an unfamiliar format.  The only way to set your child up for success is to make sure your child understands the basic premises behind what the test covers and to actually practice the types of questions he/she will encounter on test day.  I’ve never gone into a test without preparation and expected to do well so I would never expect a 4 year old to do so either.  I strongly believe that there are test-taking skills that will improve any child’s performance – and they CAN be learned!  Just take the component of stamina for instance.  What 4 year old child, naturally is gifted at focusing for an hour or more on answering boring test questions?  They can however learn to exercise their concentration and listening skills beforehand so that they are able to remain more focused for a prolonged period.  So when Noodle Pros contacted me about participating in a trial tutoring period in exchange for a review, I jumped at the opportunity and was curious as to how their service worked.

Noodle Pros is an exclusive group of experienced, professional tutors who work in all tests and subjects, from Pre-K to Graduate School.  We were so happy with our assigned teacher, Kalen who had a decade of experience tutoring and an expertise in the kindergarten G&T exam. As a fellow Ivy League graduate, I felt comforted and confident in the fact that she valued educational achievement in the same way that I did.  She is so invested in children’s development and learning that she even helped design, market and create content for Scene App for Kids on the side.  I found also that she was able to quickly establish a connection with Juliet who warmed up to her and broke out of her shyness easily with fun tasks like finding matching mermaids and coloring them for their initial project together.  Juliet liked this task so much that when Kalen promised she would keep that mermaid page for her to continue working on next time, Juliet remembered two weeks later, and looked forward to her specially saved page.  I appreciated how Kalen innately understood how to peek the interest of my 4 year-old girly girl.

The hour-long session involves teaching and/or reviewing concepts that the test would cover including visual discrimination, following aural directions, recognizing sequences and predicting patterns.  This is done through colorful manipulatives that involve plastic figurines (“let’s see how you would group these objects”), to identifying opposites with puzzle pieces (see above), to pattern completion challenges on the ipad or dry-erase board.

Together they aptly incorporated and discussed handy test-taking vocabulary such as “right, left, single, identical, diagonal, column, row, beneath, outline…” all words that kids at age 4 might not be required to know at school yet but would need to know in order to answer the test questions.   Basic arithmetic vocabulary was introduced as well.  “Let’s organize by land or sea creatures… If we take away 1 then how many do we have left?  That’s an equal number of land and sea creatures!”  I make sure to incorporate addition and subtraction concepts regularly in life so Juliet already knows how to count and subtract anything by 1 and loved that this was reinforced here.   I was also happy to observe that Juliet enjoyed all the “brain games” but was not surprised given the girl has in the past sat through 18 worksheet pages at a time totally determined to try and finish her workbook in record time.  (Is there a class for us parents to train our own stamina so that we can keep up with our own children’s love of learning?? Cuz I was ready to quit after page 10!)  Even Kalen who just met her, noticed and reported how “engaged and eager to do well” she was.  new york tutor, gifted and talented test, gifted and talented tutor, noodle pros, how to prepare for gifted and talented test  She isn’t a robot though.  And as nerdy as she may naturally be, she is still a 4 – year old.  During the hour when Kalen noticed Juliet was getting a little restless, they got up for a quick game of silly Simon says (and I spy out the window during the 2nd day of tutoring).  This enabled them to take a much-needed break, shake their sillies out and re-focus with even more energy.  And Juliet continued the laughter throughout the rest of her sessions.

It filled me with joy to see her enjoy her Noodle Pros session.  The varied tasks and visuals really helped to make the learnings fun and playful.  What child doesn’t love a game or puzzle?

What I also found to be a major benefit of this one-on-one tutoring besides the customizable program, designed to fit your little one’s specific strengths and weaknesses was the post-session report.  Below are excerpts from our first two sessions’ reports so that you can understand the level of detail you may expect.

“…She is a lot of fun and really enjoys these brain games and challenges. As I mentioned, I’m impressed with her ability to focus with you in the room. …. I asked her to identify which item in each row was different. She enjoyed this and had no trouble finding the different shell in each row. Next, we did a variety of games with manipulatives to help prepare her for the language in the three OLSAT subtests: aural reasoning, following directions, and arithmetic reasoning. When asked to sort the manipulatives into groups she was unsure of what to do. However, as soon as I specified what group: by color or by a particular type (fruit, sea creatures, etc) she was able to follow my instruction. She demonstrated strong foundational skills with math concepts seeing that she was able to count quantities accurately and understood one-to-one correspondence. We did some pattern completion practice using a Bright Kids NNAT app. I also demonstrated figural analogies in the form of matrix reasoning on a drawing app and with the SET cards. Throughout the course of the session I used the following vocabulary with Juliet: row, identical, most different, outline, solid, second to last, bottom, equal.

Overall, we were so happy with the level of engagement, learning and enthusiasm with which both Kalen and Juliet brought to each session.  Juliet actually kept following-up post- session with questions as to when she was going to get to see Kalen again and when they were going to do the games again.  That sort of sealed the deal in my mind, I’ve since booked a series of sessions for this last month leading up to the test.

gifted and talented testing, gifted and talented, gifted and talented nyc, noodle pros

Each tutor comes at a differing hourly cost and each teacher comes with their own curriculum, materials and philosophy.  So it’s important to read up on their profiles, and find your best match.  They are not cheap.  You will pay upwards of $200/hour for these premium tutors but if you compare that investment to the cost of 1 year (or 12 years of private school tuition) hoping your child will get into a citywide G&T program, there really is no comparison.  And even if your child doesn’t get in, the investment is not wasted because the skills and concepts learned will help them with logic, reasoning, analysis and focus down the line anyways.  For those of you considering having your child take this all-important 1-2hour test, this one-on-one test prep is worth it.  And with the next round of testing coming up in January, there is still time to book your private tutor through Noodle Pros.

review of ny baby show, top 3 most stylish kids' products, trendy kids products, stylishly designed kids products

We love attending the NY Baby Show (read my top 3 reasons to attend here).  It’s always a day full of family fun with highlights like face-painting and complimentary classes for kids (see Juliet getting made-up and enjoying her first chess class below).  This year it was held at Pier 94 on May 20-21st and we made sure to be there!  I love trend-spotting and I love shopping so being able to do this while getting paid to cover the show sounded like a great deal to me!  Read on to see what fab finds we found and see if your favorites made our top 3 most stylishly designed kids’ products list!nyc tradeshow, nyc parents, nyc family, new york family magazine

The shopping was endless with over 150 booths to explore.  They don’t call this the biggest baby show for nothing!  Of course much of it was not needed in our lives since J has outgrown her baby stage.  But still it was exciting to test and check out the latest in gear, strollers, accessories, classes, and parenting services.  I’m always impressed by the innovation and ever-changing technology.  We could have spent all day there especially given all the convenient rest stops.  (think cafe, reading corner filled with children’s books, dad’s lounge and a handy stroller cleaning which we most certainly took advantage of – see below)DSC_2104

With my keen eye for spotting fab finds though I was on the hunt for stylish kids’ products.  Here’s what really deserved design accolades and would fit right into any modern, NY apartment.

  1. SNOO So just when you think all bassinets are the same out comes this hybrid baby rocker and bassinet. Heard of the baby whisperer / Pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp? Watch him and you be amazed at his magical ways and easily teachable method for instantly calming a crying baby with his soothing, rocking technique.  Well he has invented this ingenious sleeper called the SNOO that detects a baby’s crying and immediately creates movements and sounds that imitate the womb with the simple push of a button or connected app.  What? you say?  Yea, really!  Watch here.a It does the work for you letting you get some additional shut eye and that, my friends is priceless.  This futuristic functionality combined with the fact that it just looks so sleek and beautiful makes the (gulp) $1200 price tag less offensive.  Extra sleep for mom?  No eyesore in the house?   Happy baby?  Priceless.a from a piece of toast
  2. BLOOM.  Out of the hundreds of high chairs out there, this definitely stands out.  It’s modern, it’s cool, it has endless color combinations and it looks like it came straight out of the Jetson’s home!  must have baby products, stylish baby products, stylish kid productsI could be convinced to have a 2nd child just to have a reason to buy this beautiful piece of furniture.  …Ok maybe… The all-white one is screaming my future unborn child’s name.  And the rose -gold?? AHHH my heart be still.  Be warned, style this high comes with a price tag to match. With price points from $450 and up, you will certainly have to invest in this conversation starter. But if you place design at a premium, this 3-position, reclining, high chair is for YOU!  Use promo cod ‘NYCSHOW20’ for 20% off!
  3. BabyNes.  Ok guys, imagine this.  Keurig your favorite coffee maker just had a baby with Gerber formula.  Ta-Da!  BabyNes is born!

DSC_2105

The BabyNes Machine prepares a perfectly mixed bottle, at the right temperature, in under a minute, all at the touch of a button.  You can receive feeding alerts from your Wi-Fi enabled BabyNes Machine, track your baby’s growth, order formula, and more, with the MyBabyNes dashboard and iPhone App. There’s always a registered dietitian on call to answer questions and help create a feeding plan for your baby.  Being all-white as it is, it won’t clash with your kitchen decor and will even up the cool quotient on your countertop!

Thank you to MomTrends for inviting me to review the NY Baby Show and for hosting a fabulous blogger lounge!  This is a sponsored post but as always all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Teletubbies

Last March we were invited to an exclusive, Teletubby gala celebrating their 20th anniversary of the beloved Nick Jr. show.

Kids and fans of all ages were treated to tattoos, face painting, bubbles, and coveted photo opps with all the favorite characters: Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.  Juliet had a blast at this colorful extravaganza!

And we were very excited to take home a goody bag filled with Teletubby activities, a DVD and a plush doll which inspired us to host an impromptu Teletubby pajama party!  Some of Juliet’s school friends who live in the building came down for the festivities and started the night off with pizza and Teletubby coloring pages.

Each of them got to pick out their own Teletubby band to wear and celebrate the 20th anniversary.DSC_1808

And together, they put the yay in Friyay!  After a round of couch jumping, they settled in for some popcorn and Teletubby TV.5.12

Afterwards, we played some toddler -friendly games and then Juliet offered to read them some bedtime stories.  5.12-001

It was an adorable PJ party that ended all too soon.  Thanks to Teletubbies for the fun time and for inspiring us to continue the celebrations at home!  You can check out Teletubbies on Nick Jr. weekdays at 9:47am.

  1. Maid Cafe

Most typically found in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, these maid cafes promise to treat you as master as they welcome you into their girly, frilly world of cuteness.    maidWith a diverse mix of families celebrating a birthday, giggling girls coming in for an after-school treat, to tourists and the random old man, the room is filled with a curious audience entranced by the spell these girls cast.  These happy-go-lucky maids dressed in stereotypical maid costumes only seen during Halloween in the States, dance, sing, play toys and games, pose for photos and encourage you to singalong and cast a spell onto your food.  What?  Yes.  Form your hands into a heart and in your most adorable voice, repeat after me…”“moe, moe, kyun!”DSC_8468tokyo themed cafe, at home maid cafe I, as an American tourist did not understand.  But I didn’t care.  And neither did my 4 year old who was just as entranced as I was.  She had so much fun she even exclaimed that she changed her mind.  She didn’t want to be a doctor anymore.  She wanted to be a waitress!  Great.  Just great.  We left in bliss anyways. If dining with your family has become monotonous, don’t fret!  ‘Cuz in Tokyo you can choose to dine with an animal of your choice!  There are plenty of cat cafes, dog cafes, bunny cafes and even owl cafes to suit your fancy!  We chose the exotic-sounding owl cafe and weren’t disappointed.japan things to do, japan themed cafe, kyoto owl cafe, owls, owlHow is it that in the States, we were never allowed to touch owls?? Apparently they’re super friendly and enjoy being petted?! Thanks to all the influential NY mommy bloggers who joined us for this little lunch!  DSC_8333

And thanks to JennAir for letting us enjoy their beautiful kitchen appliances and showroom space! Did you know their luxury appliances now have a Nest and (Amazon) Alexa hookup?  Your smartphone can now connect to your fridge and you can preheat your oven by talking through Alexa!  Who else feels like we are living in the future here??  Click here to learn more!

Card a Mom was on-site welcoming guests and introducing  everyone to their clever app which helps moms get in touch with and meet other moms sort of Match.com style.

I wrote about my awkward experiences initially trying to make mom friends on my own here and really wish this handy app was around back then!  If you’re a mom, you NEED THIS!

mom friends Hope McGrath, a transformational life coach and stylist was also on hand addressing moms’ most pressing questions concerning everything from business, to balance, to wardrobe.  Everyone loved her grounded advice and insightfulness.  As her friend of 10(?) years, I can personally attest to her genuineness, great listening skills, and stellar style.  Check out the many ways she can help you achieve your goals on her site here.

Ever since becoming a new NYC parent, I’ve enjoyed checking out the biggest baby show in NYC, the New York Baby Show hosted by New York Family.

new york baby show discount tickets, ny baby show tickets, ny baby show discount code, new york baby show discount ticket

Here are 3 reasons why you should go:

  1. It’s a one-stop shop where you can taste-test, try-out, and even test-drive all the best and latest baby, family, and parenting products!  You’ll get to browse, ask questions and compare without the high-pressure sales tactics. Discover the latest trends, learn about new technologies, and learn from other parents who have tried the products out!
  2. You can tell your husband that you’re headed to an EVENT, (not just shopping)!  This is one shopping experience that my hubby can’t say no to.  He actually enjoys tagging along, and hunting down the latest finds for our family.  The interactive nature of the event escalates the shopping experience into a fun-filled time for the whole family.  Think raffles, mommy meetups, celebrity speakers, face-painting, and other free activities for the kids!
  3. You know the fun of shopping your local grocery store when they have samples?  It’s kind of the same thing here.  Every aisle that you turn into offers snacks for you and your kids, beverages to quench your thirst, stickers and promotional toys to keep your kids occupied.  And c’mon!  Who doesn’t like free stuff!

Enter to win free tickets for you and your family!

The 1st 10 win to click through here WIN!  Don’t fret if you click through and those are gone.  You can click to purchase single or family pack tickets for half off here.  Hope to see you there!

Juliet’s favorite color has been pink since the beginning of time.  So when I heard about Pietro Nolita, an all-pink restaurant in ..wait for it..Nolita, I just had to take her!  Though pink is not MY favorite color, I do love an Instagrammable scene and this one promised to be just that.  While waiting for friends to join us for lunch, we witnessed non-stop photo shoots outside the adorable, eye-catching facade and had to wait our turn to take these shots!

Little Juliet was so happy that mommy let her wear her pink princess Aurora costume for the occasion that she belted out princess songs to the surprise and joy of pedestrians turned adoring spectators.  Much to their delight (and the restauranteurs who happily watched the mini-princess dance, sing and perform during their meal, she did this all right outside their viewing and even popped in for a view herself!

We were overjoyed when our friends arrived and couldn’t wait to try out this intriguing place!

They loved discovering the library of pink books and pretended to read each one while we waited for our table.

It’s a teeny restaurant and they don’t take reservations but being that it feels so unique and special, it is definitely worth the wait!  This would be the perfect place to host a girly, 20-person private party (themed in pink of course), wouldn’t it?

With Italian pasta, salads, sandwiches and ROSE’ on the menu, it’s definitely a place that us moms AND kids could enjoy! Note – They serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner plus cocktails til 2am!)

We had a blast at this girly restaurant and we highly recommend it for pink and non-pink lovers alike!  For you pink lovers out there, you’ll be happy to know that they sell matching tee shirts with the quirky slogan, “pink as fuck.”
