When I told Juliet we were going to a superhero party, she replied that that she was a princess not a superhero.  (What a girly girl!)  So I told her she could be a superhero with princess powers and showed her this beautiful personalized cape from Creative Capes and she was SOLD!  All I did was dress up her 3rd birthday feather dress with her tiara, a broken light-up sabor and the pink/purple cape and accessories gifted to us from Creative Capes and KABOOM!  She turned into SUPER PRINCESS J!

According to Creative Capes’ founder, Holly, “Something as simple as a cape has the power to positively affect a child’s self-esteem.”  And it’s true!  I got to watch the transformation right before my very eyes at Gymboree’s Superhero themed prom!

The photo booth area sponsored by Creative Capes, encouraged easy try-ons with a fun-filled cape and accessory station and comic-strip-style power signs.   The kids loved dressing up and posing hero-style.  It was a blast!

If you know me, you know I love a good theme party so when Gymboree New York hosted its first-ever prom, Juliet and I had to go!  What fashionista doesn’t love a reason to dress-up?

Last year, Juliet wore a white sequin tutu dress from Little Trendsetter that featured an outrageously cute, oversized bubble-bow.

IMG_8792 cute baby dressAnd so I made her and her date matching corsages and boutonneire with flower puffs, some elastic, a pin and my handy glue gun.

Her handsome date, Willem thoughtfully surprised her with a bouquet of flowers.  What a sweet date, huh? At the party, they danced, chased each other around and dined on pizza making the most of the incredible play space that Gymboree has to offer.

The evening ended with them being crowned Prom King and Prom Queen!  They were so honored.

So this year, when Gymboree announced it was having its prom again and after People Magazine wrote this article, we were so excited to return!

Juliet and I had already dressed as flappers last Halloween so we already had Gatsby-esque outfits ready to go! Here’s a snapshot of us returning from our trick-or-treating adventure last year.

And this girl loves to DANCE!  Here she paired the dress  with dollar store necklaces and Mini Melissa shoes that I bought at a sample sale online.

review of ny baby show, top 3 most stylish kids' products, trendy kids products, stylishly designed kids products

We love attending the NY Baby Show (read my top 3 reasons to attend here).  It’s always a day full of family fun with highlights like face-painting and complimentary classes for kids (see Juliet getting made-up and enjoying her first chess class below).  This year it was held at Pier 94 on May 20-21st and we made sure to be there!  I love trend-spotting and I love shopping so being able to do this while getting paid to cover the show sounded like a great deal to me!  Read on to see what fab finds we found and see if your favorites made our top 3 most stylishly designed kids’ products list!nyc tradeshow, nyc parents, nyc family, new york family magazine

The shopping was endless with over 150 booths to explore.  They don’t call this the biggest baby show for nothing!  Of course much of it was not needed in our lives since J has outgrown her baby stage.  But still it was exciting to test and check out the latest in gear, strollers, accessories, classes, and parenting services.  I’m always impressed by the innovation and ever-changing technology.  We could have spent all day there especially given all the convenient rest stops.  (think cafe, reading corner filled with children’s books, dad’s lounge and a handy stroller cleaning which we most certainly took advantage of – see below)DSC_2104

With my keen eye for spotting fab finds though I was on the hunt for stylish kids’ products.  Here’s what really deserved design accolades and would fit right into any modern, NY apartment.

  1. SNOO So just when you think all bassinets are the same out comes this hybrid baby rocker and bassinet. Heard of the baby whisperer / Pediatrician, Dr. Harvey Karp? Watch him and you be amazed at his magical ways and easily teachable method for instantly calming a crying baby with his soothing, rocking technique.  Well he has invented this ingenious sleeper called the SNOO that detects a baby’s crying and immediately creates movements and sounds that imitate the womb with the simple push of a button or connected app.  What? you say?  Yea, really!  Watch here.a It does the work for you letting you get some additional shut eye and that, my friends is priceless.  This futuristic functionality combined with the fact that it just looks so sleek and beautiful makes the (gulp) $1200 price tag less offensive.  Extra sleep for mom?  No eyesore in the house?   Happy baby?  Priceless.a from a piece of toast
  2. BLOOM.  Out of the hundreds of high chairs out there, this definitely stands out.  It’s modern, it’s cool, it has endless color combinations and it looks like it came straight out of the Jetson’s home!  must have baby products, stylish baby products, stylish kid productsI could be convinced to have a 2nd child just to have a reason to buy this beautiful piece of furniture.  …Ok maybe… The all-white one is screaming my future unborn child’s name.  And the rose -gold?? AHHH my heart be still.  Be warned, style this high comes with a price tag to match. With price points from $450 and up, you will certainly have to invest in this conversation starter. But if you place design at a premium, this 3-position, reclining, high chair is for YOU!  Use promo cod ‘NYCSHOW20’ for 20% off!
  3. BabyNes.  Ok guys, imagine this.  Keurig your favorite coffee maker just had a baby with Gerber formula.  Ta-Da!  BabyNes is born!

DSC_2105

The BabyNes Machine prepares a perfectly mixed bottle, at the right temperature, in under a minute, all at the touch of a button.  You can receive feeding alerts from your Wi-Fi enabled BabyNes Machine, track your baby’s growth, order formula, and more, with the MyBabyNes dashboard and iPhone App. There’s always a registered dietitian on call to answer questions and help create a feeding plan for your baby.  Being all-white as it is, it won’t clash with your kitchen decor and will even up the cool quotient on your countertop!

Thank you to MomTrends for inviting me to review the NY Baby Show and for hosting a fabulous blogger lounge!  This is a sponsored post but as always all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Teletubbies

Last March we were invited to an exclusive, Teletubby gala celebrating their 20th anniversary of the beloved Nick Jr. show.

teletubby 20th anniversary, nick jr. teletubby anniversary, teletubby day

Kids and fans of all ages were treated to tattoos, face painting, bubbles, and coveted photo opps with all the favorite characters: Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.  Juliet had a blast at this colorful extravaganza!

We attended this party with fellow blogging buddies, Harper and Harlow from Gotham Love.17636919_10154456029733994_1625729632287313740_o

And we were very excited to take home a goody bag filled with Teletubby activities, a DVD and a plush doll which inspired us to host an impromptu Teletubby pajama party!  Some of Juliet’s school friends who live in the building came down for the festivities and started the night off with pizza and Teletubby coloring pages.

Each of them got to pick out their own Teletubby band to wear and celebrate the 20th anniversary.DSC_1808

And together, they put the yay in Friyay!  After a round of couch jumping, they settled in for some popcorn and Teletubby TV.5.12

Afterwards, we played some toddler -friendly games and then Juliet offered to read them some bedtime stories.  5.12-001

It was an adorable PJ party that ended all too soon.  Thanks to Teletubbies for the fun time and for inspiring us to continue the celebrations at home!  You can check out Teletubbies on Nick Jr. weekdays at 9:47am.

things to do in tokyo, cook tokyo, travel to tokyo, tokyo for kids

If you’re looking for a list of the most popular tourist attractions, the top temples, or info. on the major amusement parks, museums and zoos to take your kids to in Tokyo, this is not for you.  Yes, there is a Tokyo Disneyland, Legoland, museum of nature and science, and Ueno Zoo but there are also similar sights elsewhere.  If you’re looking for the wild, the wacky and the only-in-Tokyo experiences, you’ve come to the right place!  Here are 5 must-see spots to take your kids to while in Tokyo that will leave you craving more of the colorful, crazy, and quirky “kawaii” that makes Tokyo the most memorable place to travel to.

  1. Maid Cafe

Most typically found in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, these maid cafes promise to treat you as master as they welcome you into their girly, frilly world of cuteness.    maidWith a diverse mix of families celebrating a birthday, giggling girls coming in for an after-school treat, to tourists and the random old man, the room is filled with a curious audience entranced by the spell these girls cast.  These happy-go-lucky maids dressed in stereotypical maid costumes only seen during Halloween in the States, dance, sing, play toys and games, pose for photos and encourage you to singalong and cast a spell onto your food.  What?  Yes.  Form your hands into a heart and in your most adorable voice, repeat after me…”“moe, moe, kyun!”DSC_8468tokyo themed cafe, at home maid cafe I, as an American tourist did not understand.  But I didn’t care.  And neither did my 4 year old who was just as entranced as I was.  She had so much fun she even exclaimed that she changed her mind.  She didn’t want to be a doctor anymore.  She wanted to be a waitress!  Great.  Just great.  We left in bliss anyways. For more on Maid Cafes click here.

  2. Animal themed Cafe

If dining with your family has become monotonous, don’t fret!  ‘Cuz in Tokyo you can choose to dine with an animal of your choice!  There are plenty of cat cafes, dog cafes, bunny cafes and even owl cafes to suit your fancy!  We chose the exotic-sounding owl cafe and weren’t disappointed.japan things to do, japan themed cafe, kyoto owl cafe, owls, owlHow is it that in the States, we were never allowed to touch owls?? Apparently they’re super friendly and enjoy being petted?! We got such a kick out of this place and couldn’t believe how many different owls there were..ones I didn’t even know existed.  It was surreal.  Every few steps, we met a wildly different owl. Check out this one that looked wooden!DSC_0351We got to pet (with the back of our hands) about 15 different owls that day.  How cool is that?  Juliet just learned about owls at school too and was super psyched.  Hoot Hoot!  What an amazing learning experience for the kids to learn fun facts about owls hands on. DSC_0356

  3. Monster Cafe

Better than Xanax (I would imagine).  ‘Cuz how can anyone be sad in a room that looked like a rainbow just exploded there?  I think if Lisa Frank, 80’s rainbow sticker creator had a restaurant it would look like this. things to do in japan, travel to tokyo with kids, cool things to do with kids in japan, kawaii japan A game of I spy in here could include unicorns, bunnies, and gigantic mushroom sightings that will have you feeling like you’re hallucinating in this trippy place.  cool things to see in tokyo, cool things to do in tokyo, places to eat tokyo, tokyo for kids, japan with kids, monster restaurantAnd don’t worry, while the name of the restaurant may sound scary, there is nothing scary about this place.  It’s more of a dream than a nightmare!  I would love to know what sort of dreams little J had after experiencing this place…DSC_8790Address: YM square building 4F, 4-31-10, Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo. Opening Hours: 11.30am-4.30pm and 6pm-10.30pm daily.

  4. Robot Restaurant

“Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto” as the song goes, this place (more like a cafe with parade style entertainment) is the definition of wacky.  And it’s WONDERFUL!  robot restaurant review, things to do with kids in tokyo, things to do with kids japanIt’s so hard to find the words to describe how much I enjoyed this weird, highly Instagram-able wonderland. things to do japan, things to do tokyo, themed restaurants, themed cafes japan It’s burning man on a sugar high! Think dazzling lights, estatic costumed performers, beaming laser lights and Transformer-like robots coming at you…”roboto roboto” their main song will be singing in your head for days!  It’s sensory overload in the most over-the-top fashion and you will wonder how you’ll ever go back to normal life again..things to do tokyo, travel to japan with kids, robot cafe, themed japanese cafes, themed restaurants japanI’m uploading some insider videos of this place and all our Japan adventures on our Youtube channel soon so subscribe to see all the wild details.  TIP:  secure reservations beforehand.  get the biggest discount from the Metro Magazine at the airport when you land or click here.  And if your child scares easily from loud noises or large mechanical creatures stay away.

  5. Alice In Wonderland

Where else can you find not 1 but 5 (yes 5!) Alice in Wonderland themed restaurants in one city?  Tokyo, this is why we love you!  aliceinDiamond Dining (where these pictures are sourced from) owns Alice in a Labyrnith, Alice in Fantasy Book, Alice in Magical Land, Alice in an Old Castle, and Alice in a Dancing Land.  alicerestauranThese super cute meals and fantastical scenes are bound to make your child squeal in delight while making the momarazzi in us all marvel at all the amazing photo opps. alice in wonderland restaurant japanThe Japanese are so amazing at inspiring us moms to try creating food art at home.   themed restaurants japan, alice in wonderland restaurant in japan, cute japanese cafes, themed cafes in japan

It’s always fun to get to see and hang out with my fellow NY mom bloggers but even more fun when I get to host it with fab title sponsors, Meisterdish and JennAir!  On March 20th, we gathered at the beautiful JennAir showroom on 59th street and collaboratively cooked up a storm using Meisterdish’s easy to follow recipes and instructions.

I wrote about my awkward experiences initially trying to make mom friends on my own here and really wish this handy app was around back then!  If you’re a mom, you NEED THIS!

mom friends Hope McGrath, a transformational life coach and stylist was also on hand addressing moms’ most pressing questions concerning everything from business, to balance, to wardrobe.  Everyone loved her grounded advice and insightfulness.  As her friend of 10(?) years, I can personally attest to her genuineness, great listening skills, and stellar style.  Check out the many ways she can help you achieve your goals on her site here.

After enjoying delectable dishes, trying our hand in the JennAir kitchen and nibbling on fresh baked cookies, each guest took home a goody bag filled with a Meisterdish box, wine pairing wheel and luxe notebook from JennAir, free class passes from Chaise Fitness, (my current, go-to workout), Buntoppers hair accessories, a Live Clean Baby bubble bath / wash (smells amazing!!) and $150 off NY Kids Club!

Juliet’s favorite color has been pink since the beginning of time.  So when I heard about Pietro Nolita, an all-pink restaurant in ..wait for it..Nolita, I just had to take her!  Though pink is not MY favorite color, I do love an Instagrammable scene and this one promised to be just that.  While waiting for friends to join us for lunch, we witnessed non-stop photo shoots outside the adorable, eye-catching facade and had to wait our turn to take these shots!

Little Juliet was so happy that mommy let her wear her pink princess Aurora costume for the occasion that she belted out princess songs to the surprise and joy of pedestrians turned adoring spectators.  Much to their delight (and the restauranteurs who happily watched the mini-princess dance, sing and perform during their meal, she did this all right outside their viewing and even popped in for a view herself!

It’s a teeny restaurant and they don’t take reservations but being that it feels so unique and special, it is definitely worth the wait!  This would be the perfect place to host a girly, 20-person private party (themed in pink of course), wouldn’t it?

I submitted Juliet’s pictures on a whim to the Lil Jewels Boutique model search on Instagram despite the model call asking for kids 6 and over.  So much to my surprise, at 4 years old, and even with 4000 entries, Juliet was chosen as the youngest model to get to walk the New York Fashion Week runway for her couture kids collection.  I told Juliet she was chosen because she was a good listener and so well behaved 🙂 and she was psyched!

nyfw model, nyfw kids show, kids fashion show, lil jewels, lil jewels boutique, lil jewels nyfw

We’ve enjoyed watching kids fashion shows and women’s shows during NYFW ever since she was a baby, and always from the sidelines.  I couldn’t believe my very own baby would be ON the runway this time!  And what a runway it was!!  Here is Juliet posing pre-show.

This tremendously long runway was unlike the last runway Juliet crawled (at 10 months old) for Old Navy and so I was a little concerned with how she would do especially given the girls weren’t given the opportunity to rehearse together.

Backstage, I was able to cover as media and watch all the adorable shenanigans.  It was like a pastel tutu explosion in there!

Juliet made lots of friends while waiting for her 15 minutes of fame.

Juliet said she felt like she was in a princess story and that it looked like everyone was getting dressed for the ball.

She enjoyed getting all glammed up with hair and makeup and like a superstar, waited patiently in a cramped and crowded room.  Yana, the designer was terrific with all the girls, engaging them by playing a round of Q&A talking about favorite colors and princesses.  You could tell that she genuinely loved little girls.  It’s no wonder she dresses them so gorgeously!

When the time came to line up and wait for our turn on the catwalk, Juliet held my hand and told me (unprompted), “Mommy, I’m gonna be brave like (princess Merida)”

She was visibly excited to take her turn down the catwalk.

By the way, aren’t the dresses to die for?? So sophisticated yet adorable at the same time!  I was in love! Here’s the runway finale!

After the show, Juliet explained to me how it was time to return her beautiful dress, just like Cinderella did after the ball. I found it hilarious that she in her head was re-enacting Cinderella’s post-midnight story as she slipped back into her “regular clothes.”  Here she is in those regular clothes..

We’re both a little under the weather this Valentine’s but still had fun playing dress-up for Valentine’s week.  Juliet is sooo happy whenever she gets to wear a dress.  And this extra fancy Amber Berry one is one of my favorites from her closet.  For a special mommy and me outfit look, I paired it with a pastel cape from H&M and complimented it with my matching tulle dress from Needle & Thread which you can buy on Asos.com one of my favorite online shopping destinations.

Motherhood is extra sweet this year.  Juliet is growing up, and communicating her love so much through her impromptu declarations of love, creative gift-giving, and endless hugs and kisses.  She is more affectionate now than she ever was and it is truly such an adorable stage.  I lovingly watch her grow up before my eyes and this Valentine’s I know she’ll be mine forever.
