When I told Juliet we were going to a superhero party, she replied that that she was a princess not a superhero.  (What a girly girl!)  So I told her she could be a superhero with princess powers and showed her this beautiful personalized cape from Creative Capes and she was SOLD!  All I did was dress up her 3rd birthday feather dress with her tiara, a broken light-up sabor and the pink/purple cape and accessories gifted to us from Creative Capes and KABOOM!  She turned into SUPER PRINCESS J!

According to Creative Capes’ founder, Holly, “Something as simple as a cape has the power to positively affect a child’s self-esteem.”  And it’s true!  I got to watch the transformation right before my very eyes at Gymboree’s Superhero themed prom!

The photo booth area sponsored by Creative Capes, encouraged easy try-ons with a fun-filled cape and accessory station and comic-strip-style power signs.   The kids loved dressing up and posing hero-style.  It was a blast!

If you know me, you know I love a good theme party so when Gymboree New York hosted its first-ever prom, Juliet and I had to go!  What fashionista doesn’t love a reason to dress-up?

Last year, Juliet wore a white sequin tutu dress from Little Trendsetter that featured an outrageously cute, oversized bubble-bow.

Her handsome date, Willem thoughtfully surprised her with a bouquet of flowers.  What a sweet date, huh? At the party, they danced, chased each other around and dined on pizza making the most of the incredible play space that Gymboree has to offer.

So this year, when Gymboree announced it was having its prom again and after People Magazine wrote this article, we were so excited to return!

Juliet and I had already dressed as flappers last Halloween so we already had Gatsby-esque outfits ready to go! Here’s a snapshot of us returning from our trick-or-treating adventure last year.

Juliet’s favorite color has been pink since the beginning of time.  So when I heard about Pietro Nolita, an all-pink restaurant in ..wait for it..Nolita, I just had to take her!  Though pink is not MY favorite color, I do love an Instagrammable scene and this one promised to be just that.  While waiting for friends to join us for lunch, we witnessed non-stop photo shoots outside the adorable, eye-catching facade and had to wait our turn to take these shots!

Little Juliet was so happy that mommy let her wear her pink princess Aurora costume for the occasion that she belted out princess songs to the surprise and joy of pedestrians turned adoring spectators.  Much to their delight (and the restauranteurs who happily watched the mini-princess dance, sing and perform during their meal, she did this all right outside their viewing and even popped in for a view herself!

It’s a teeny restaurant and they don’t take reservations but being that it feels so unique and special, it is definitely worth the wait!  This would be the perfect place to host a girly, 20-person private party (themed in pink of course), wouldn’t it?

We had a blast at this girly restaurant and we highly recommend it for pink and non-pink lovers alike!  For you pink lovers out there, you’ll be happy to know that they sell matching tee shirts with the quirky slogan, “pink as fuck.”

I submitted Juliet’s pictures on a whim to the Lil Jewels Boutique model search on Instagram despite the model call asking for kids 6 and over.  So much to my surprise, at 4 years old, and even with 4000 entries, Juliet was chosen as the youngest model to get to walk the New York Fashion Week runway for her couture kids collection.  I told Juliet she was chosen because she was a good listener and so well behaved 🙂 and she was psyched!

We’ve enjoyed watching kids fashion shows and women’s shows during NYFW ever since she was a baby, and always from the sidelines.  I couldn’t believe my very own baby would be ON the runway this time!  And what a runway it was!!  Here is Juliet posing pre-show.

This tremendously long runway was unlike the last runway Juliet crawled (at 10 months old) for Old Navy and so I was a little concerned with how she would do especially given the girls weren’t given the opportunity to rehearse together.

Backstage, I was able to cover as media and watch all the adorable shenanigans.  It was like a pastel tutu explosion in there!

Juliet made lots of friends while waiting for her 15 minutes of fame.

Juliet said she felt like she was in a princess story and that it looked like everyone was getting dressed for the ball.

She enjoyed getting all glammed up with hair and makeup and like a superstar, waited patiently in a cramped and crowded room.  Yana, the designer was terrific with all the girls, engaging them by playing a round of Q&A talking about favorite colors and princesses.  You could tell that she genuinely loved little girls.  It’s no wonder she dresses them so gorgeously!

When the time came to line up and wait for our turn on the catwalk, Juliet held my hand and told me (unprompted), “Mommy, I’m gonna be brave like (princess Merida)”

She was visibly excited to take her turn down the catwalk.

By the way, aren’t the dresses to die for?? So sophisticated yet adorable at the same time!  I was in love! Here’s the runway finale!

After the show, Juliet explained to me how it was time to return her beautiful dress, just like Cinderella did after the ball. I found it hilarious that she in her head was re-enacting Cinderella’s post-midnight story as she slipped back into her “regular clothes.”  Here she is in those regular clothes..

Gotham Hall, a downtown venue that I’ve previously frequented for galas, benefits and other fashion shows will have new meaning and fond memories for me now.

Thanks Yana and the Lil Jewels Boutique team for selecting Juliet!  It was an honor to represent your brand and a dream come true to walk NYFW!

We’re both a little under the weather this Valentine’s but still had fun playing dress-up for Valentine’s week.  Juliet is sooo happy whenever she gets to wear a dress.  And this extra fancy Amber Berry one is one of my favorites from her closet.  For a special mommy and me outfit look, I paired it with a pastel cape from H&M and complimented it with my matching tulle dress from Needle & Thread which you can buy on Asos.com one of my favorite online shopping destinations.

Motherhood is extra sweet this year.  Juliet is growing up, and communicating her love so much through her impromptu declarations of love, creative gift-giving, and endless hugs and kisses.  She is more affectionate now than she ever was and it is truly such an adorable stage.  I lovingly watch her grow up before my eyes and this Valentine’s I know she’ll be mine forever.

I’ve used Zazzle in the past for business cards and was recently prompted to try it out again with a blogger credit.  Browsing the site, I quickly realized that I could customize anything from fashion items to paper goods and bedroom decor.  So I went on a bit of a limb and created a very girly glam duvet cover.  This first image got rejected because I was using a Chanel image unfortunately.

viewThe 2nd design got approved and though I wish I had decreased the size of the image to make it look more realistic, it came out great!

chanel home I wanted it to look as though I had a bunch of items sprawled out on the bed trompe-l’oeil style but it’s a little larger than life.  It was a bit hard to estimate from the website, how large the items would look in person with the duvet actually on the bed.  But I’m OK with the end result.  It just looks a little more playful now..

black white bedroom, gold wallpaper, damask wallpaper

I like that it adds a bit of quirkiness to this sort of formal bedroom.  What do you think?

bedroom chandelier, zazzle duvet

I’m happy with the result especially given the duvet was soooo soft! It’s such a pleasure to snuggle up to this winter!

And did you see that Zazzle is currently having a sitewide 15% off Valentine’s sale with code ‘ ZAZZSENDLOVE’?  I’m going back and customizing some matching mommy and me Valentine’s day tee shirts!

Special thanks goes out to Zazzle for partnering up with me on this post.  As always, all opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Juliet is just 3.5 but being the NYC minifashionista that she is, she has already seen over 20 fashion shows with me. The girl has seen a lot of runways.  And she has in turn made NY her runway.  Watch out world, she is taking the city streets by storm! So when we were invited to see the BKLYN ROCKS kids’ fashion show at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn November 9th, we knew we had to be there (if only to get to wear this outrageous outfit).

Janie And Jack shoes (bought 2nd hand), The Children’s Place socks, Gap tweed dress (bought 2nd hand), Cat and Jack for Target cape, (free) Hawaiian lei turned into a flower crown

Plus BKLYN ROCKS promised to be jam-packed with celebrities like Derek Jeter, Teresa Giudice (housewives of NJ), and Nigel Barker whose kids walked the runway in Haddad Brands clothes by Nike, Jordan, Levi’s and Converse.

The show opened with Fabolous giving a shout out to his Brooklyn roots and namesake non-profit organization A Fabolous Way, which helps New York communities in need.

City Point, Kids Foot Locker, And Haddad Brands Present BKLYN Rocks - Backstage and Front RowFrom having attended a Haddad Brands fashion show in the past, we knew we were in for some serious entertainment.

Similar to what Haddad Brands did at NY Fashion Week, they again featured additional entertainment in between shows with performers like Street Justice Crew and Bobbi Chambers of Broadway’s School of Rock as well as DJ Little Club Heads spinning live throughout the event.

There was a lot of action coming down this runway – even from the models themselves.   You didn’t just see your usual sashays..

Of all the kids’ fashion shows that we’ve seen, Haddad Brands definitely has the most swagger.

With our suitcase packed with Kidpik Basics and Cat and Jack pieces, Juliet and I headed to Central Park.  Styling kids has been a passion of mine ever since having one myself and ever since I left my professional career where I used to style all the Saks Fifth Avenue models at the LI store.  As part of a continued photography series with Danny Weiss, I styled Pilar (pictured below) along with my daughter in coordinated outfits.   Luckily, Pilar was just as into an impromptu tea party as Juliet was!  The two met, and immediately bonded.

misaki kawai, cave life

I love art and so does Juliet.  We’ve enrolled her in art classes since age 18months and she has happily and proudly made her own art at various school settings and at home ever since!  She often comes running over to us at school pick-up excitedly telling us, “I made this for YOU!!” And we’ve already collected a mountain of her artwork, turning our fridge and sometimes her playhouse into a virtual art gallery.  One way we’ve encouraged her love of art is to take her to art galleries around the city.  Here are the 3 main reasons galleries are great places to take a toddler.

misaki kawai, cave life

  1. It’s a mommy and me outing that doesn’t SUCK.  There comes a time (usually weekly) where you’ve had enough of the playgrounds and indoor play pits.  Anyone relate to this?  Kids running around, crying and screaming while your mind goes numb and you look into your phone as your only outlet for parental pleasure…  Sometimes you need to mix it up!  Take your kids to a kid-friendly art gallery for some education and culture that feeds both your minds and souls.  How many times can you say you left inspired after leaving the playground?? misaki kawai, cave life
  2. Experience the culture without the overwhelm.  Toddlers (and plenty of adults) have short attention spans.  Instead of trying to cover an entire museum in one day in order to try and get your money’s worth,  (after all you could be forking over $20 admission at a famed NYC museum), you can expect to dedicate anywhere from 10minutes to a half an hour at a gallery for free while feeling the same accomplishment and satisfaction of having completed an artsy, worthwhile experience.  Small doses feel manageable.  Avoid the overwhelm and ensure yourself a happy toddler.misaki kawai, cave life
  3. It encourages curiosity and creativity.  Win mommy of the week award (if there ever was such a thing) by enriching your child’s life with the joy of exploration, curiosity AND creativity.  Juliet actually told me the other day at our last gallery outing, “Mommy, I love going on adventures with you.  this is so exciting!”  You never know what you may find!  In today’s case, we found an all yellow room, with fun painted furniture in the shape of bananas, snakes and bones.  The large-scale paintings, and wall murals seemed straight out of a child’s imagination.  Juliet immediately related and was quick to tell me about her favorite finds.cave life, nyc art, nyc art gallery, 312 bowery, the hole

If you’re interested in checking out this sunny space, go to 312 Bowery to a gallery space named “The Hole” before this “Cave Life” exhibit by Misaki Kawai ends on October 30th.  Note that it is only open Wednesday – Sunday 12pm-7pm and is by the Bleeker Street 6 train and Broadway-Lafayette B, D, F and M trains.

It promises to bring out the kid in all of us.  Juliet and I went home and continued to talk about what we saw and even tried to replicate some of the artwork at home!
