Fashion

In my last style diary post, I included a thrifted fur that I had found in Lancaster PA for $5.  It reminded me that I was behind in my outfit posts and still needed to post this picture from this past winter, also featuring a thrift store fur piece.  I wore this larger fur (thrifted for $10) on top of my cardigan and got tons of compliments on the sweater from people assuming it was all sold as one piece.

I made it casual with a pair of black skinny jeans, black rainboots and my hair tied up in a messy bun.

The cardigan is from the Limited, the jeans $15 from Forever 21 and the sequin black ruffle tank is from H&M.

I added a little more shape with the skinny belt and added interest with the black jeweled, bowtie like necklace.

The purse, pictured earlier is from TopShop.  I think the whole outfit from head to toe costed me less than $200

I’ve been so consumed with wedding planning during my free time that I’ve barely had time to pay any attention to the blog.   Sorry!

Here is an outfit post that I’ve been meaning to upload for over a month now. Ever have one of those fashion aha moments where you suddenly realize that one thing goes with another?  For me it all started with this lace dress which I last wore to NY Fashion week in a totally different way.

From there, I added a short sleeved cashmere vneck top which had cute sparkly detail at the cap sleeves.  This was one of those pieces that I hardly ever wore and I was thrilled to have been able to bring it out again as a layering piece.  I nearly forgot it even existed.  And voila!  I had a new layered look!

Then to add a little shape, I added a vintage brown distressed belt,  topped the outfit off with a matching hat ( a freebie I found while shopping a VIP stop during NY fashion week) and added a $5 thrift store, fur collar.   Yes, I said thrift store.  While traveling through Lancaster, PA I stopped in to see what the Amish were thrifting these days and had to celebrate on my way out after finding 2 furs for under $10 and a cute hat.   Also pictured here are Celine boots which were a gift from my stylist friend at Bloomies.  (love her!)  The silver Prada purse was a gift from myself when I first started working at Saks.  A girl has to celebrate a new job, doesn’t she?

What do you think of this look?  And where would you wear it? I want to hear from you so please leave a comment.

It was a mix of vintage and new.  Girly and masculine.  Anytime I can add a little contrast to an outfit, it seems to make it all the more interesting.

Within minutes of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress being revealed, designers worldwide were scrambling to make copies and/or dresses “inspired” by the Alexander McQueen gown.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this article showcasing a Chinese bride who wore a knockoff dress just 36hours after the royal wedding.

“The Muyi Wedding Dress Company, located in Suzhou, China, made this dress, which sells for about $320. Suzhou is known as “Wedding Dress City” because it boasts more than 1,200 wedding gown factories”.

I warn you that I personally got burned from one of these Chinese knockoff e-tailers.  I found chinese-shop2009 on ebay and trusted them to deliver on my one-shoulder, Maggie Sottero knock-off dress.  They were responsive with my q&a, had a wide variety of fabrics/colors to choose from (more than Maggie offered), and had almost perfect feedback scores. For only $158 I decided why not take the risk.  After all, I needed a 2nd wedding gown for my 2nd reception (1week prior to the “real” wedding) and loved the idea of wearing a different gown with simpler train instead of having to reveal the gorgeous Kenneth Pool gown that I bought at Saks for the main reception.

Time flew by before I noticed 3months had passed since the original order which is when I checked in and the seller promised it would ship soon.  When it finally arrived, it came to me the wrong color (I ordered ivory and received gold), the dress had prominent pin holes throughout the entire dress, and stunningly the cut and drape were even all wrong!  And to top it off, the zipper broke on the first try!

This is what I expected (shown here is the authentic Maggie Sottero Fiorella dress on a model and then on me to show the back). Beautiful, right?

But instead, I got a poorly made replica in the wrong color with the wrong back  with holes all over and a broken zipper.  As soon as I have a full-length photo of me in it, I’ll have to post.  But for now, here are the close-up shots (which do not accurately reflect the gold color due to the camera flash).

Even from these pictures you can see all the large holes on EACH pleat.

The draping was the most modern, and unique element of the original gown’s design but unfortunately, chinese-shop2009 got it all wrong.

To top it off the bra cups had been sewn in too close together making what looked like a monoboob.  Ugh.

After a few emails back and forth where Chinese-shop2009 asked for the photos and then completely ignored me, I searched ebay for buyer protection help.  When reading the fine print though, I learned that their offer expires after 90 days and then you’re basically on your own!  So beware to all wedding dress buyers on ebay because most if not all wedding dress makers will require 90days to produce and ship to you. A special warning goes out to anyone considering shopping with chinese-shop2009.  Do not on any circumstance trust or buy from them.  They did not respond to my numerous emails with listed complaints and photo evidence and have not offered to resolve the issue in any way.  It’s unfortunate, because, they are tarnishing the reputation of foreign ebay sellers and adding to buyers’ hesitation in shopping with ebay. Hopefully, none of you will have to learn the hard way as I did with ebay buyer protection rules.

In case chinese-shop2009 ever changes their ebay seller name, their associated email was chinese-shop@live.cn and the shipment came in from

Jiang Rong from Hangzhou whole sale city trading co.

Buyers beware!

Once upon a time, in a land far far away was a beautiful princess-to-be with a fairly boring but passable fashion sense.  And during the 5month engagement the world was abuzz with predictions, speculations and designer drawings of what the princess bride would wear.  My personal prediction was that she would play it safe with something traditional and classic.  And knowing the grand cathedral that she was to be wed in, I envisioned her in something grand, something with covered shoulders, something with a little lace and definitely something with a long train.  I just prayed it wouldn’t be as ridiculously long as Princess Diana’s train.

So when I got to work this morning, the first thing I did was to anxiously play the video of Kate Middleton taking that famous ride towards Westminster Abbey.  No I wasn’t one of the millions of Americans who set their alarms at 5am or stayed up all night partying at a viewing event.  A girl has got to work!  Excitedly though, I was happy to have been right about the wedding dress predictions and stunned to see the similarities between Kate Middleton’s dress and Grace Kelly.  It immediately brought me back to the day my best friend emailed me that same Grace Kelly photo that has been floating around the web .  She actually suggested to me that I wear something similar to Grace Kelly’s dress for my very own wedding!  What timing!  For it seems Kate already stole the idea with the help of Sarah Burton from Alexander McQueen.

Did anyone else find the dress a bit anti-climatic?

If you want your clothes to work overtime, you’ve got to figure out ways to wear it now and wear it later.  It’s all about styling for various weather conditions and styling for different occasions.  Once you get the hang of it, you can get the most out of your wardrobe.

I bought this satin blue dress while on a trip to Shanghai.  I fell in love with the pockets and easy style.  The material makes it seem fancy but the style is quite casual and you know I loved the mix in contradictions.

In the summer, I wore it with bright pops of color that first started with this funky sequin clutch and ended with an equally rainbow-like chunky necklace.  The pink scarf was a freebie from fashion week and the shoes were jewel-encrusted Ann Taylor shoes I bought on sale.  The entire outfit was only around $200.

This winter, I wore the same dress with wooly color-speckled tights, suede fringe ankle boots and a fur cropped jacket.   I also had on a fitted black cardigan which is not pictured here.  See, blue and black CAN go together!

I’ve been so caught up with work and wedding planning that I’ve sort of been ignoring this blog!  So much so that I hadn’t even had time to promote my last goody bag giveaway.  Because only 1 person entered, I’m extending the deadline to April 14, 2011.  Click here to enter to win a NYC goody bag from fashion week!

As a continuation to an earlier Style Diary post about 1 dress worn 3 ways, I’m adding yet another way to style the same old Calvin Klein neutral grey, cowl neck dress.  I love challenging myself to never wear an outfit the same way more than once.

Here, I’m wearing the Calvin Klein dress that I bought at TJ Maxx for about $39.  I’ve paired it with a fun pair of polka dot tights, $15 leopard flats from Forever 21 and a blue silk cardigan that my friend bought me.   I found the necklace for about $25.  I can’t tell you how many compliments I received over the outfit, the tights and the necklace.  Little did they know how little I spent on the entire outfit.   Of the 4 Calvin Klein dress outfits, which one is your favorite?

Ever since I started this blog, I’ve enjoyed the perks of getting fashion deliveries.  Today a charitable group called Fashion Delivers actually delivered this wonderful care package filled with Echo scarves, gloves, and an Alice & Olivia vip discount card.  Thank you Fashion Delivers! I’m giving away the Tiffany blue quilted gloves to my friend Tiffany and giving away the paisley and striped scarves to a lucky reader.  I’m adding it to my next goody bag giveaway.  The teal blue crinkle scarf is something I plan to wear tomorrow.  I found it perfectly matched the H&M blazer already in my closet.

Here is the picture of the scarf on.I’m wearing this outfit tomorrow ‘cuz it matches the teal/black & white/ pink dessert table that I’m creating for Lafayette 148.  I’ll show you pics next week!

Is anyone else loving this bright teal for spring?

Every year there seems to be a new focus on denim.  This past fall/winter’s season was all about the cargo skinny jean.  Though I initially resisted, I finally gave into the casual cool look when I found this lovely charcoal zip-ankle cargo jean at Off 5th.  It was originally $100 but I bought the “SL8″ pair for about $30.  Gotta love the deal!

Here are a couple looks where I pair the jeans with grey plaid flats and a charcoal fedora- a perfect weekend combination.

The  “Just Sweet” flats and the Fedora were each only $30 or less.

The striped long sleeved shirt and flowery cardigan were cheap and cheerful finds from Forever 21.  Both were under $25 each.

I see this as the perfect weekend outfit to go sightseeing in or to attend a casual weekend brunch.  Can you believe I found this sweet Chanel purse at a consignment store?

The next outfit pairs fancy with casual.  I love mixing it up and often seek to wear contradictions.  Here I pair a fancier sequin black stretch sweater with my casual new cargos and again wear it with the same hat and shoes for a darker edgier look than the previously seen feminine floral pairing.

As you can see, I’m a huge fan of Chanel.  I LOVE their purses!  Which outfit would you wear?

I wore the outfit out with my faux fur coat from Express minus the hat today.

Thank God for flats!  A New Yorker can only walk so far in heels…

Fashion has never been so sweet.  I’ve spent months salivating over dessert tables and have been inspired to create my own.  I’ll post some of my first creations next week and for now simply showcase some logo-inspired fashionable desserts.  Tell me what you think of these!
