Style Diary

2016 was a great year for us.  We are grateful and thankful. Every new year’s eve, I look back through old pictures and like to reminisce on all the good times.  Each mommy and me look presented here represents to me a day of fun and laughter.  And I hope that your 2016 was filled with much of the same!

After a blistering hot week in NY, Sunday was a breath of fresh air!  For our Sunday finest, Juliet and I dressed up in matching mommy and me dresses – coordinated outfits, I should say as these are not exact matches.  If you follow me, you know this is what I usually prefer.

The bright summery yellow is so cheery that it brightens my mood just wearing it!  My dress was found at TJMaxx and is by Calvin Klein ($34.99).  Hers was from Gymboree last year during their clearance for about $20 I think.

I accessorized with my Valentino purse (bought with Saks employee discount years ago) and a Rocksbox necklace.  J is wearing a dollar store beaded necklace which perfectly matched her pink bow shoes by QQ Girl.  (We’re now selling this through our Totspot account @fabgabblog!)

My shoes are Valentino rock stud pastel flats – such a perfect find for a NY mom-on-the-go!

After church we enjoyed the most delicious brunch at Olio e Piu, a trattoria known for their brick oven pizza.

The sauce was AMAZING!  So good it rivaled the best pizza we had in Italy!  I SO recommend this place – especially because the goat cheese mushroom and zucchini frittata that I also ordered was just as dreamy!

frittata It’s a great place to sit and people watch plus you’re surrounded by flowers at this restaurant!  Definitely grab a sidewalk seat and enjoy NY-ers passing you by.  Juliet couldn’t get enough of all the cute dogs she spotted.

If you’re a follower of my blog or Instagram account, you know I can’t resist a cute mommy and me matching outfit.  I love recording my toddler’s tiny body on camera and styling my baby so she coordinates next to me.  This way I can track her growth through the years while also getting to relish in her being my minime.  She’ll be 30 and I’ll be 70 and we’ll still be in matching outfits haha!  This style diary outfit began with Juliet’s Chanel-inspired cardigan by Kaven’s Nest.

I paired it with cat shoes that I purchased on the sample site, Zulily, a cat quilted pleather skirt from H&M,  a Century 21 shirt, and a pleather bow from HaleyLynne.

With a little searching at my favorite stores for cheap trends, I found a similar mustard colored cardi at Forever 21, which I wore with my bow blouse and pleather jeans from H&M and my leopard loafers from Zara.  You don’t have to spend a lot to look like a fortune 🙂

This look of the day was matchy matchy without being exact which is the way I prefer our mommy and me outfits.

I’m not normally a fan of yellow but somehow this sunny yellow JCrew skirt spoke to me.  And it’s refreshingly versatile.  Pair it with a neutral like I did in the first picture below and immediately it helps tone down the outfit.  (Lipstick scarf, lace top by Ellen Tracy, flats from JCpenney).

Or wear it with black and white and a pop of color.  (Zara shoes, Chanel purse, Bettes B, TJMaxx hat)

For work, I might wear it with my metallic and black Zara blazer as shown below. Spiked necklace is from TJMaxx and the gold studded tank is from Century 21.  P urse is Chanel and heels are Dolce Vita from Saks.

I hope you moms out there had a very happy mother’s day.  Mine was pretty perfect with a beautiful brunch outdoors by Rockefeller Center, a stroll through Saks and midtown to enjoy the amazing weather and church with my honey and little one.  Here we are imitating the elephant we found on the pillow and then walking through Rockefeller Center afterwards.  She can imitate a handful of animals already at just 14months old (as well as identify 16 body parts and so much more)!  I’m a proud mommy.

As you can see, Juliet and I shamelessly match one another.   I’ve been a little obsessed lately with matchy matchy mini-mes thanks to my fashionable mommy friends on Instagram.  They inspire me!  See below for a quick sample! There’s a reason I haven’t written a style diary post in months.  As a new mom with a 2month old, the only thing I accessorize with these days is a burp cloth.  Dressing up to me now simply means actually putting on a bra.  I now understand why moms spend so much time in Juicy sweatpants.  I can barely get out of my PJs on most days!  You may find this weird coming from such a fashion-obsessed blogger like me but when you’re so sleep deprived and forced to try and take naps whenever the baby is down, staying in your PJs not only makes it easier to jump into bed at all times of the day but it also saves time.  And as any mom with a newborn knows, time is of the essence!

Currently, I have a rare and precious moment to myself now that baby is taking her nighttime nap.  And I feel thankful to be able to pinterest and fantasize about wearing all these little black dresses.  They’re beautiful, aren’t they?

At 8 weeks post c-section, I have 8lbs to lose before I can fit back into my own LBDs.  Not bad for not having had a moment to work out I guess and totally worth the sweet, precious gift I’ve been given!

Stretchy dresses rock!  My non-maternity wrap dresses and dresses with a little spandex have made getting dressed at 36 weeks pregnant a little more bearable.  First dress is by Cynthia Steffe and second dress is by Theory.

I did find it hard to zip up my leather brown boots in the picture above though!

  • Lbs gained in the past 2 weeks:  3!
  • Lbs gained during pregnancy:  23
  • est. baby’s weight at this stage:  6lbs

I’m in the home stretch and can hardly believe that I’m about to really have a family!  No  more free-spirited newlywed life!  We’re about to be tied down real soon.  And I can hardly wait!

I’m so glad I limited my maternity fashion spending spree because I’ve found that a lot of my regular wardrobe could stretch enough to fit the added 11″ to my waistline.  Take for example this Forever 21 bow cardigan.  It’s both long enough and stretchy enough to wear at 35 weeks with my pregnancy jeans.

These days, I’m enjoying all the pre-NYFW work, as grueling as the hours may sometimes be, I’ m reminded of why I love my job.

The other day when my hubby took me out to see the symphony at Lincoln Center, I couldn’t help but let out a huge smile at the sight of the NY Fashion Week Mercedes Benz sign.  The Lincoln Center temporary NYFW site is up!  And the countdown begins!

I’ve definitely decided that I must be growing the next karate kid.  At 34 weeks she is punching, jabbing and kicking me non-stop.

She has a way of kicking me in the ribs and punching me in the bladder at the same time.  So very pleasant…

wearing dress by Vince, boots by Bruno Magli and jacket by F21.

Anyways, I’ve been designing her future nursery in my head for quite some time.  Browsing through Pinterest for inspiration and baby blogs for theme ideas and links to vendors has been one fun part of preparing for baby.  I finally settled on a black/white graphic motif for the bedding with plans to add color through the wallpaper, rug and artwork.  Pops of yellow and fuschia will be found in the room and this new temporary wallpaper that I found will be the perfect solution to allowing the nursery to grow into a toddler’s and eventually a little girl’s room.

I’m so excited to start setting this all up!

You know what made my day?  Fitting into my pre-pregnancy Anne Klein dress.  Ahh the simple pleasures of life!

It’s chilly here in NYC so I topped off the dress with a leopard cardigan and bow belt.  Here, I wore it with my Bruno Magli leather boots (which I got for free from my contact at the showroom years ago), and my Miu Miu tote from Barney’s end of year sale.  You’ve gotta love fab freebies and frugality, right?

For any of you ladies who are reading this and have never gone through pregnancy, here is some birth control for you.  Ever hear how beautiful pregnancy is?  (Don’t listen to those fake celebrities).  Here is the truth.  It sorta sucks!  Your body feels possessed as this baby takes over and transforms your life – your eating and sleeping patterns and general ability to feel like yourself.  Nobody is really honest and upfront about all the negative symptoms you can be tortured with for the 40 week period that is your metamorphosis. So ladies, here is the real deal and my running list of pregnancy symptoms that I’ve learned could inflict a poor pregnant woman (listed from feet up):

  • swollen feet (my friends have had to buy new shoes one size up from their usual)
  • leg cramps (this usually happens while in bed)
  • restless leg syndrome (I never believed this really existed until I experienced it myself)
  • vericose veins
  • loose joints and increased clumsiness
  • constipation
  • nausea / vomitting
  • extreme hunger pangs and crazy cravings
  • always  having to go pee or urinary incontinence if you’re really unlucky
  • gassiness
  • hemorrhoids
  • pelvic discomfort and constant pressure
  • diarrhea
  • bloating
  • a stretched out and literally ripped up vajayjay (sometimes they’ll even cut you a new asshole if you don’t rip naturally during labor!)
  • stretch marks
  • tender boobs
  • leaking boobs
  • back pain
  • heartburn
  • moodiness
  • fatigue
  • shortness of breath
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • swollen hands that hurt
  • nosebleeds
  • faintness, dizziness
  • forgetfulness
  • headaches
  • a widened nose
  • stuffed up nose
  • heightened sensitivity to smells (most of which feel highly unpleasant)
  • sore and bleeding gums
  • metallic taste in your  mouth
  • excessive saliva
  • skin discolorations
  • pimples
  • constantly feeling dehydrated
  • insomnia
  • discomfort sleeping.  having to get up every 4-5hours in the middle of sleep for the bathroom, a drink of water and to blow your nose.

At 33 weeks, I’ve experienced my fair share of the above along with 20 additional lbs.  So it’s no wonder that I take delight in the simple pleasures in life like fitting into an old dress.  It’s just one thing that makes you feel back to normal – well sort of.
