back to school

For our Back-To-School Brainiac Bash, we were so happy to have Mabels Labels as one of the goody bag sponsors.  They were the perfect brand to tie into the celebratory school kick-off season since their handy, customizable labels are so perfect for lunch boxes, backpacks, and the extra clothes stored at school.  Have you heard of Mabels Labels?  They are the most trusted label provider for durable, customizable and cute labels!  They stick on everything: clothes, shoes, sports equipment, sippy cups..the list goes on.

Any parent knows that we are constantly susceptible to losing any one of these items while commuting, strolling around or simply leaving things behind from destination to destination.  These microwave-safe, laundry-safe, dishwasher safe labels are wayyyy better than the masking tape and scribbly name that our parents resorted to. Be the mommy superstar that you know you want to be and start school, camp, daycare and everyday right with the coolest identification in town.  With celebrity mom endorsements coming from everyone from Victoria Beckham to Gwyneth Paltrow to Heidi Klum and Reese Witherspoon, you know you’re onto something!

Besides being entirely innovative, and handy I loved how customizable they were!  You could choose from tons of designs.  Being that I have a princess-obsessed 4 year old who loves purple and pink, I chose for her this adorable tiara design below that included her full name and my phone number in case anything got lost (and found).

organizational labels, mabels labelsThey also had Hello Kitty, and a myriad of other popular graphic designs.  The perfectionist in me is sooo happy with these perfectly pretty labels.  It satisfies whatever OCD I have and I can’t get over how I’m able to wash, wear and launder these things!!  How amazing is that?  And they’re perfect for little kids trying to figure out their left vs. right shoe.  They make these ingenious stickers that are vertically pre-cut in half so the child can visually match them up to complete the picture and figure out which shoes goes on which foot!shoe labels, school suppliesHooray!!

What would YOU get??

My daughter is attending a new school this year – one that surprisingly has a busy calendar of activities for the parents to note, memorize and attend.  The kids are only 2 mind you but there is a teacher visit at your home, several parent mixers, seminars, a curriculum lowdown night, picture day, parent teacher conferences, holiday events and more to log into my expanding calendar. Mind you, I LOVE the idea of community involvement and appreciate such planning on behalf of this very organized school and parent’s group.  Yet somehow I found it a bit dizzying and wondered to myself how parents of multiple children deal with it all. (Please explain if you happen to be one!)

I just attended my first parent mixer.  And I felt oddly anxious about it like it was MY first day at school.  Remember the butterflies you got at the prospect of entering a new classroom with no known friends, wondering who would sit next to you at lunch?  That was me as I prepared to put my best foot forward and couldn’t for the life of me decide what to WEAR!  I’m a fashion blogger that has styled hundreds of models in my lifetime yet I had to change my outfit 3 times to finally feel confident walking out the door!

what to wear

Outfit 1 was too flashy.  While the outfit might have screamed Stella, and announced fashionista (which I’m perfectly comfortable with), it felt too over-the-top for a parental meetup.  And first impressions are everything.

So I put away the bling and created a preppy, understated outfit.  And soon enough I was starting to feel like Goldilocks.  The first bed was too big. The next was too small.  Well this outfit was too boring.  Not me.  Undress!

Outfit 3 if I had to title it would be called, “conservative chic.”  I dusted off a Shoshanna work dress from my past life which was colored a neutral (i.e. relatable) camel and sported a fit and flare style.  I accessorized with sensible stacked heels and a smart Prada purse along with simple, modern jewelry.  Finally!  I figured I could pass as a working mother coming straight to the meetup, without scaring anyone off with a suit.

what i wore

Shoshanna dress, Prada purse, Zara heels, Sisley necklace

Phew, that took a  lot of over-thinking.  Who knew parent – school meetings could be so stressful?  And the school year hasn’t even started.

I heart nerds.  Always have, always will.

i love nerds

So when summer started coming to its close, I felt like Fab Kids should have one last hurrah in the park while the weather was still nice and so I decided to have a nerdy back-to-school-themed play date.

Even toddlers go to school. My daughter at 18 months old this fall was enrolled in music, school skills, ballet as well as art for instance.  So to get into the back to school spirit, I thought it would be fun to get some toddlers together to do a book exchange.  And as with all my themed play dates, the kids were asked to dress up in theme.

Some inspiration shots were featured on the Facebook and Instagram accounts to get guests excited and thinking about what to wear.

nerd party

It was a fun mommy and me play date in the park.  I supplied the picnic blankets and organized the book exchange. Here are some of the kids checking each other out.  The one pictured on the left looks like she’s doing a little dance, doesn’t she?

All kids were asked to bring a book to trade in.  And at arrival, each was given a number in exchange for their book.  So the first person to arrive had first choice of all the books and so on and so on..

IMG_0666 We brought in Goodnight Ipad, a modern day spoof on Goodnight Moon as well as Lisa in New York figuring some modern NY mommy and kid duo would appreciate these.  Don’t you love our little nerds?  I can’t get enough of suspenders with bowties.

The play date was such a huge success that some might even call it a love fest.

I admit it.  I’ve become that crazy mom who is constantly planning lavish parties for her little one.  You would have thought I was planning a wedding with as much thought, time and energy I invested into my daughter’s first birthday.  See for yourself here.  I was dead set on making it the best birthday she’d never remember.  And on a budget.  And all by myself.

And now that her next birthday isn’t for another 7months, guess what… I’m already on it.  I have the theme, venue, Pinterest board, invites, decor and even the paper plates ready to go.   Don’t believe me? Much to my husband’s dismay, all the paper products are stacked and in my hallway closet.  The party’s theme is animal themed if you must know.  Guests will get to initially take pictures with Leo the lion (Juliet dressed in costume).  There will be animal mask photo props for the photo booth area, the singing troupe will be leading singalongs only with songs with animals in the lyrics, and themed foods will include hot dogs, animal crackers, and critter cupcakes – all designed with a strict vintage colored decor theme.  Juliet’s party animal friends are going to roar with delight.

And as if that weren’t crazy enough, I’ve been dreaming of other party themes that I could have Juliet host during the inbetween months now until her birthday. Because you know, you can never have enough parties.

Already I’ve got Juliet hosting a back to school party this September with my FB page “Fab Kids”(check it out now and give it some love).  Yes, she’s only 1.5 years old but yes she’s going to school this fall semester so why not celebrate?!  We’re requiring all the guests (babies and toddlers that is) to dress as nerdy as possible.  Think glasses, suspenders, bowties and pocket protectors.   It’s all about the fashion after all!  AND I already have Juliet’s outfit planned.

Those of you who follow me on Instagram already know that we’ve already hosted a (toddler) white party – P Diddy style where all guests showed up in white.

white party

White for a picnic playdate you say?  Deal with it.  Fashion is impractical.  It’s best kids learn that lesson early on.

Here is Juliet greeting her guests

You’ve gotta look fab while you’re having fun!

The kids had a load of fun playing with the park’s toys and enjoying story time and singalongs.  And I think a few passerbys and gawkers couldn’t help but vicariously enjoy the fun too.

All we needed was for P.Diddy to show up.  Ah well, there’s always next year.

Stop by Facebook to vote on details for our next NYC mommy and me meetup.  Nerds Rule!

And follow us on Instagram @Fab_Kids for outfit inspiration for your minifashionista!

While you do that, I’ll be planning my next, next party.  I’m thinking Haute Halloween… fashionable halloween anyone??
