halloween costume

I believe in recycling and re-using what you have and the same philosophy comes up during Halloween when I’m preparing costumes for our endless series of special events.  See my last post about 8 easy DIY Costumes from last year here as an example!  This year, I took a slightly different approach and let Juliet”s favorite toys serve as the inspiration to all our make-at-home costumes.  They were so fun to create with her and for her.  See below for some costume inspiration and let me know what you think you could create at home with what you already have!

  • Baby Momma.  Does your doll love dolls?  Make her a mommy this year!  With an infinity scarf, I made her a makeshift baby carrier and stuffed her Water Baby in there.  Props could include, a (plastic) wine glass (I filled our with sparkling water), a Starbucks cup, a cellphone, a stroller, baby bottle, purse and kitchen accessories!  We glammed her up as a fab mom but you could easily do the stressed out mom look and opt for a more disheveled tee shirt and leggings paired with some under-eye circles and messy hair lol!diy costume, make at home costume, kids costumes, kids costume ideas, mommy costume, beauty salon dropout, beautician costume
  • Beautician.  If your daughter is like mine, she is obsessed with anything beauty-related.  Here she is making over Barbie’s hair, make-up and nails.  The Barbie hair styling bust came in handy for this photo opp (as well as for our recent Barbie-themed play date read more here.  You could however, easily use any long-haired doll, play make-up, or an apron filled with tools (ours was from Melissa & Doug).
  • Veterinarian.  Do you have a doctor’s set and some stuffed animals?  It’s easy to re-create this doctor’s costume with a button down shirt, glasses, a cute stuffed animal and doctor’s tools (stethoscope, thermometer, bandaids, suckers, etc).  My friend made this lab coat and gave it to us as a hand-me-down and it completed the costume!!  BTW, if you haven’t already heard of Parker, you’ve got to check him out! While he looks like your classic, cuddly teddy bear, he actually digitally interacts with an app for an immersive, augmented reality experience!  We live in the future, I tell you!parker the teddy bear, seedling bear, seedling toys, dr costume, kids costume ideas, veterinarian costume
  • Rock Star.  Encourage your kid to rock on with his/her favorite musical instrument of choice and/or a microphone.  Get flashy with the outfit, and have fun!  I gave Juliet’ an 80’s rocker look with MY fishnet stockings, hair in a side ponytail, a bright neon dress, toy guitar and sunglasses.  Must have sunglasses.rock star costume, 80s rocker, 80s rock star, kids costume ideas, diy costume

fab kids halloween

Now that I’m a mom, Halloween is an extra special time to enjoy with my toddler.  She loves dress up, and so do I so our week is filled with fun festivities and non-stop costume changes.  See my 8 easy, no-sew, make-at-home, costume ideas in my previous post for some shots of what she has worn through the years.  Or here for our matching flapper costumes for the Gymboree 1920’s Gatsby themed party.

Last year’s Fab Kids Halloween party was so much fun, I just had to host it again and luckily, Gymboree Tribeca was on board to be our venue sponsor.  And they gave away terrific raffles for the event!  By tagging #gymBOOree on social media posts and by following @gymboreenewyork and @fab_kids, guests would be entered to win free tickets for Gymboree’s next event.  Plus those submitting emails would automatically be entered to win a free month of classes and open play valued at $260!

We don’t blame you!

If the kids needed a break from all the action, they could getaway into one of Gymboree’s side rooms and make some creepy crafts.  Here are the BOO-tiful ghosts that were stickered, an easy task for toddler hands to create on their own.  (Hey, ghosts need to accessorize too!)

Next door to all this action was our video room where guests got to do their thang in front of the camera (dance, act silly, and act out their costumed character) in front of event sponsor, Jessa Flynn Productions.

Jessa masterfully, records, edits and then magically produces a perfect 15 second snapshot to upload to your Instagram!  How perfect for an @fab_kids party and all our Instagram followers, right?  Go check out her site.  She has the most moving music video captures of newborns, families and special occasions!  We were so lucky to have her.

And if all this worked up an appetite, a dessert bar and food station awaited you!  What’s a Halloween party without some tricks and treats?

a Designing dessert bars is one of my favorite creative outlets.  I love picking a theme and the process of taking stock of what I already own, figuring out what I need to purchase on a tight budget, and then creating something out of nothing.  Call me crazy but it’s one of the most fun challenges ever.   I went with a black white and orange theme because Gymboree had orange walls already, and because I already owned a lot of black and white (see my black and white themed blogger bash and last year’s Haute Halloween party).

I found these free black and white Boo printables here.

And I re-used my $1 banners found at Target before my black and white blogger bash.

Not sure you can see in the photo above but the pail of wine says, “in case you came for the BOOs.”

I think it’s important to offer some healthier snack options for kids at parties so I made sure to add in baked goldfish crackers (front, right), caramel flavored rice crackers (front left), and mandarin orange snack packs in real fruit juice.  See my earlier post for more healthy Halloween party snack ideas.

The Jack O Lantern faces were drawn on with a black sharpie pre-event and other orange colored snacks were added in.  I’m a stickler for sticking to theme colors!!  Check out my other dessert bars here.

The second station featured baby oranges made to look like pumpkins (just me getting crafty with a Sharpie again!)

The banana ghosts with chocolate chip faces were a Pinterest fail for me.  They would NOT stand up!c

These ghosts on a stick however, were a win for me and a last minute idea.  I was trying to figure out how to re-use these striped Target $1 vases that I used for my black and white blogger bash and there really are few treats long enough to be visible while sitting in something so long.  But I had the straws and this ended up being a popular treat amongst all the kids!  I just added the Boo printable with tape to coordinate with the theme.halloween party food

These custom rice krispy treats and Boo cookies were made by Angela’s Sugar Fix.  She took my idea and ran with it!  If you’re a baker yourself and are up for a challenge, the Instagram printable for this dessert was found here.  Angela is just the sweetest, the easiest to work with, and full of creative ideas and beautiful presentation options.  I’d highly recommend her for your next NY party!

SAMSUNG CSC The Halloween decor consisted of items I already had in my house.  The pillars, I’ve used over and over at all my parties (and each time I top with coordinating papers) and the skull lanterns were a freebie from another mom.  I just placed them on top of a goblet and upside down bowl that I already owned.  The paper products were found on sale at TJMaxx.  I’m a Maxxinista after all! SAMSUNG CSC The banners are items I’ve used at past parties.  The white one which I made from scratch can be found at our toddler white party.  SAMSUNG CSC And that polka dot linen is actually my daughter’s crib blanket!

Designing and creating food stations, beverage bars, and dessert bars has always been a fun, creative outlet for me.  Professionally, I planned and executed them for various luxury brands at Saks as well as for Moroccanoil at NY Fashion Week as part of a larger event marketing effort.  Personally, I’ve planned them for friend’s baby showers and my daughter’s birthday.  Staking out a location is always step #1.  When I saw this bright orange wall at Gymboree, I knew it would be the perfect Haute Halloween backdrop.  food station

I opted for the wall along the hallway without the hooks so that I could have a blank slate from which to work upon.  And I pressed 2 smaller, 4’x5′ tables together to provide ample room for pizza, beverages, snacks and dessert.  I was working off a tight budget so nothing here was custom made like I’d usually do for other parties.  All the paper products were surprisingly found at the local Party City.  Pretty impressive for Party City, huh?  IMG_3646

I just had to create the banner, tape it up, rest my black velvet fabric and tape up the edges with black electrical tape and throw a striped fabric down the middle making sure everything touched the floor.  You never want to see the legs on a table unless they are very decorative and match your design theme.  A benefit for having your linens touch the floor is creating needed storage space.  Tuck all your replenishable foods /snacks and take-home boxes underneath for easy access.   I loved the banner because you could still give it a customized look with the stickered letters that came along with it.  I wrote Haute Halloween for this food staion, and used another one saying @fab_kids in the photo room.  IMG_3654The white pillared cake stands were topped with orange paper to add some additional contrast to the table and make the mini cupcakes pop.  All the mini cupcakes were sponsored by Baked by Melissa and were soooo scrumptious!  And I had already bought the cake stands for another event.  These can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond.

IMG_3649

It’s nice to be able to have some detail both behind the food station wall as well as in front of it.  So I brought the black/white/orange decor theme in with the handmade chain banner below which helped to tie the whole look in.  The sodas were canistered in these simple containers, also purchased at Party City and were labeled “venom” and “poison” to go with the Halloween theme.IMG_3650

The napkins and leftover goody bag spiders continued the black / white / orange theme down to the very last detail.IMG_3651 IMG_3652 GoGo SqeeZ sponsored our applesauce snacks and were a popular hit amongst our costumed crowd.

We also had pumpkin – shaped pretzels, cookies and fruity chews.  Guests dined in a separate room, formerly the art room.

The photo area had a simple backdrop using the same banner found at the food station.  It read @fab_kids so that the brand would show up in everyone’s photos.

The chalk hashtag unfortunately did not stay on long but guests were asked to hashtag #fabkidsandtheirstylishmoms (our FB page name) on any of their Instagram uploads.

Once they tagged that and the venue @gymboreenewyork, they’d immediately be entered to win VIP tickets to Gymboree’s upcoming Thanksgrooving disco party.  Congrats to Kye who dressed up as Robin Thicke and won these tickets!!
